[By Electric Cable —Copyrights (Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.l (Received Wednesday, 7.53 p.m.) NSW YORK, Nov. 2.

The election results are:

Senate. Democrats Republicans Parmer-Labourite •• • • 4 Doubtful House Of Representatives. Republicans Democrats • Farmer-Labourites .... ~ Doubtful 38 A 1 Smith (Democrat) has been elected Governor of New York Sac for the fourth time, deteating Mills (Republican). Smith’s lead m York City alone was more than a State was nearly three to one. but is incomplete, in favour of a modification or prolubiTho Republicans swept the State of Connecticut. Senator Bingham and Governor Trumball were ro-clected with the entire State ticket. Walsh (Democrat) was elected United States Senator for Massachuetts over Butler (Republican). In Illinois Smith (Republican) was elected Senator over Brennan (Democrat). Hayden (Democrat) appears to have defeated Cameron (Republican) for the Senate in Arizona and Robinson is leading Woodleen in Indiana. As expected tho traditionally Democratic southern States all returned Demorcratlc Senators. The wots won the prohibition ■referenda in three States and five are doubtful. Tho wets carried Wisconsin by a small majority, the effect being that Congress will bo’asked to amend tho Volstead Law to authorise tho manufacture and sale of beer containing 2.75 per cent, alcoholic content by weight under Government supervision with tho provision that tho beer bo not drunk’on tho premises where obtained.

Mrs. Ross, running for re-election of the Governorship of Wyoming, appears to be trailing behind her male opponent. Returns for eighteen State Governorships show that 10 Republicans and 8 Democrats havo been elected. Thomas (Democrat) defeated Harrcld (Republican) in Oklahoma which was another of the doubtful States. Howes (Democrat) is leading his Republican Senator opponent, Williams, in Missouri, Indicating an important Democratic victory. COOLIDGE RECEIVES SETBACK. (Received Wednesday, 9.35 p.m.) NEW YORK, Nov. 2. As fuller returns were available it became evident that Walsh had defeated Butler (President Coolidgo’s nominee in his own State) by probably a ten-thousand plurality. This will perhaps be the most sensational defeat of tho present elections, parrying with it a blow to Republicans and President Coolidgo’s prestige. Two other Democratic victories seemed to bo indicated when Pomereno took tho load over Willis in Ohio and Woollen (Democrat) overtook Robinson who was at first reported one of tho two successful Republican senatorial candidates from Indiana. INCONCLUSIVE VOTE ON PROHIBITION. (Received Wednesday, 10.10 p.m.) VANCOUVER, Nov. 3.

The latest indications are that sentiment in tho eight States of tho Union which voted yesterday on an advisory prohibition referendum is not clear. Now York gave tho wets a vast majority and tho wets are loading in Illinois. A heavy poll is recorded for the repeal of the California enforcement law, but the returns are not yet complete.

DEMOCRATIC MAJORITY IN SENATE, (Received Wednesday 10.40 p.m.) NEW YORK, Nov. 3. Yesterday's elections developed many uncertainties. Despite tho notable Democratic gains sumo outstanding contests remain in the doubtful column this morning. Besides the Democratic gain of the Senatorial seat in Massachusetts by the defeat of Eutlor, tho personal friend of President Coolidge, the party's candidate Wagner, defeated Senator Wadsworth, chairman of the Republicans National Committee in New York. Two seats in tho House of Representatives, one in Pennsylvania, and tho other in New York, have been gained by the Democrats from the Republicans. The Democrats are keeping their Senatorial candidates in the lead In Arizona, Missouri, Maryland and Kentucky, all of which wore represented in the last House by Republicans. In ail the Democrats must win nine seats and overturn tho present Republicans majority in Senate.
