Producing Pork and Bacon
In addition to the butter-making and freezing industries which are carried on on a large scale in Fcilding, another important industry has come into prominence recently, due to the development of the pork and bacon industry consequent upon the demand for the New Zealand carcase which has set in at Horae. As far as the North Island is concerned, Fcilding has been selected as the centre for dealing with the pigs, the work being handled by the Municipal abattoir. So great has been the development in this newly-organised business, that the works have had to be enlarged and new machinery has been introduced to increase the handling capacity as well as to enable the industry to be managed with the utmost efficiency. Whilst additional capital expenditure has been involved in order to provide for this industry, the abattoirs arc a sound revenue producing concern, and the revenue over and above working costs is being applied towards paying for the improvements, which include an important piece of machinery recently installed.
Tn order lo give, some idea oF the development in this industry, the following figures have been supplied by the Town Clerk. For the past month a total of 1481 pigs were dealt with, and the total bandied since April Ist, is 3933. During September 1925, 30G pigs wore bandied, while for the same month this year 611 were received. The total for October 1925, was 595. as against 14S1 for the same month this year. These pigs wore all dealt, with hy band, and the new machinery will increase the capacity considerably. This industry contributes largely to the prosperity of the town.
