SPEARFELT WINS MELBOURNE CUP.

There was an enormous attendance, ith weather calm and fine for Cup day at the V.R.C. meeting at Flemington. The Governor-General, and State Governors with the Empire Parliamentarians and scores of New Zealanders were present. The going was good. New Zealander Wins Hurdles. ' The New Zealand-bred Cherry Ripe, after being sixth in the early stages of the Hnrdles race, finished fast and won nicely. She is trained by Amounis’s mentor, F. McGrath. Da*pite his big weight, Fuji San scored a brilliant win in the Highweight Handicap. His rider. Pike, also won this race last year on Red Gauntlet Marital Takes Nursery Handicap. Maritza, finishing fast, won the Nursery Handicap nicely. His owner, Mr. J. P. Arthur, formerly raced Fuji San,. Maritza cost one hundred. guineas as a yearling. The Melbourne Gup, The Melbourne Cup was a great raws, for Comus set a merry pace over the first mile, five horses having winning chances at the distance, spearfelit came with a great run and' won biSlllantly. Naos came fast in t*e last furlong. Spearfelt is owned bj D. Grant, who purchased the trainer, y. O’Neill’s share for 2500 guineas in October. Spearfelt was third for the CujJ.in 1924. Cairns Rides Second Winner, The Tan Yean Stakes furnished a great finish. Metellus was prominent in the early stages, but lost position at the half-mile, then won in the last stride.
