SPEARFELT WINS MELBOURNE CUP.

There was an enormous attendance, ith weather calm and fine for Cup day at the V.R.C. meeting at Flemington. The Governor-General, and State Governors with the Empire Parliamentarians and scores of New Zealanders were present. The going was good. New Zealander Wins Hurdles. ' The New Zealand-bred Cherry Ripe, after being sixth in the early stages of the Hnrdles race, finished fast and won nicely. She is trained by Amounis’s mentor, F. McGrath. Da*pite his big weight, Fuji San scored a brilliant win in the Highweight Handicap. His rider. Pike, also won this race last year on Red Gauntlet Marital Takes Nursery Handicap. Maritza, finishing fast, won the Nursery Handicap nicely. His owner, Mr. J. P. Arthur, formerly raced Fuji San,. Maritza cost one hundred. guineas as a yearling. The Melbourne Gup, The Melbourne Cup was a great raws, for Comus set a merry pace over the first mile, five horses having winning chances at the distance, spearfelit came with a great run and' won biSlllantly. Naos came fast in t*e last furlong. Spearfelt is owned bj D. Grant, who purchased the trainer, y. O’Neill’s share for 2500 guineas in October. Spearfelt was third for the CujJ.in 1924. The time equalled the Australasian record, held by Windbag, and Kennaquhair. Cairns stated that, he was a long way back in the first’ portion of the journey, but made a good run behind The Banker. Sper/r----felt was the fittest horse in the ntae and was not In the least distressed at the finish. Garins was originally engaged to ride Heroic. Later there was a possibility that he would ride The Banker. He was engaged on the course to ride Spearfelt. He Is a native of Palmerston North, and was apprenticed to Jack Carter, Blenheim. HSs first wiflnner was Hydrant. Cairns Is thirty-eight years of age. O’Neill, the trainer of the winner, is also a New Zealander. The top-weight, Brenda’s Son, led aaarly all the way in the Steeples and won easily. He was ridden by an es)Wew Zealander, H. Thompson. Cairns Rides Second Winner, The Tan Yean Stakes furnished a great finish. Metellus was prominent in the early stages, but lost position at the half-mile, then won in the last stride. This gave the rider, EL Cairns, his second win for the afternoon. Racing In Detail. went to the front, and at the ten furlongs led by fifteen lengths from Balbus. Then came Valaisian, Piastoon, Limerick, Rampion, Beodos and The Banker, with Naos last. At the mile, Comus had increased his lead to twenty lengths from Balhus, who was followed by Pantheon, Rampion, Valaisian, Limerick, The Banker, Piastoon, and Spearfelt, with Slave now last, and Naos beginning to move up. At the seven furlong post, Comus began to tire, and Pantheon was with him for half a mile. Others prominent were The Banker, Royal Charter, and Spearfelt, with Rampion dropping back. Pantheon and The Banker were in the lead coming around the turn .from Royal Charter and Spearfelt, with Naos coming fast. The first four were almost on level terms at the entrance to the straight, and a great race home followed. Spearfelt gradually forged ahead, and won by half a length from the fastfinishing Naos. with Pantheon a neck away. Next came Royal Charter and The Banker, then Our Prince, Johnny Jones, Valamita, Tookarby, Spearer, Vaibeo, Rampion, Limerick, Miss Disraeli, Bcedos, Slave, and Piastoon, with Comus and Balbus last.
