RAISING THE RATE FOR CABLES
PROTEST FROM BUSINESS MEN. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Last Night Considerable alarm is felt by the Association of British Manufacturers and Agents over the new telegraph regulations re deferred rate messages. These are largely used by commercial men, and, it is considered that tho alteration will have the effect of reducing the number sent and will also entail a largo amount of work in coding an dedcoding, if they have to bo sent at full rates. At a meeting of the council today, an example was given where a message sent on Saturday cost 11s 4d, and to-day would cost £2 2s 9d. Tho Council protest strongly against the regulation as a retrograde step, particularly at a time when it is understood that business in cables is distinctly profitable to the Department.
