WEST END SCHOOL

MEETING OP COM-WITEE, At the regular meeting o£ the West End school committee, hold last night there were present Messrs. C. H. Whitehead (in the chair), B. Hands, Ij. Purton, A. Penketh, G. Newth, F. Carpenter, and G. Dyne (secretary). Headmaster’s Report. The headmaster, Mr. F. W. Moore, reported that the attendance for the past four weeks had greatly improved the figures being as follow: October S, 376.7; October 15, 374.9; October 22, 390, October 29, 392. The average attendance was, therefore, 353.4, whilst the present roll number stood at 419. Twenty-one pupils had been admitted during the mouth, and fifteen had left. Mr. Taylor had been absent for a week owing to illness, and Miss Ercreton had been away for two days for the same reason. Ho had to acknowledge a donation ot 7s lid from Miss Owdram for tho purchase of sports material for the in* fant department. It had been decided to close tho school on Thursday (People’s Day) for (he Spring Show. General. The secretary commented upon the most unsatisfactory state of tho playing areas, and stressed the urgent need for immediate attention to the grounds. Tho areas were, in places, covered with six inches of sticky mud which caused the children considerable inconvenience.

A letter was received from Major S. Sandlo, district Boy Scout Commissioner, expressing pleasure that tho services of the West End Troop of Boy Scouts had been appreciated by tho West End School Committee. It was, he said, part of tho Scout’s duty ”to bo useful and to help o the re,” and ho was giallfiod at tho most, thorough way in which the West End troop, led and inspired by their energetic. Scoutmaster (Mr. F. Carpenter) had risen to Iho occasion. It would give him much pleasure in reporting their action to the Scout, Dominion Headquarters. Tho kindness of tho school committee, ho concluded in placing the school buildings at the disposal of the Scoutg for weekly parados was keenly appreciated. In regard to the overcrowding of the infants’ quarters, mentioned by Mr. Moore, it was decided to write (o tho Board, pointing out the necessity for another room being provided, and suggesting that an open-air class-room bn constructed. Tho committee expressed appreciation of tho action of tho West End Hockey girls for their donation of £5 toward the school funds, and to Miss Owtram for her donation to tho infant department.
