SORDID FRENCH CRIME
RECORD OF HATRED AND AVARICE. [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Sunday, 1.30 p.m.) PARIS, Oct. 30. A remarkable trial concluded with the imposition of the death sentence upon the wealthy Madame Lcfebre, for the murder of her daughter-in-law. The crime rcvaled a story of avarice and hatred. The young wife hesitated before marriage, but consented because she thought it a good match. After that haggling occurred between the two families over tho marriage settlement, over the wedding presents to bo given, over the honeymoon ,and over tho young wife’s expenditures. Madame always hated the girl’s family, and determined that no offspring of theirs should be grand children of hers. When she learned that tho young wife was about to become a mother, Madame invited the couple to accompany her on a drive, and shot tho girl dead with a revolver in the motor-car. Tho doctors refused to pronounce her insane.
A curious feature of the trial was tho son’s obvious fear of his mother. It scorned that while he was giving evidence, he waited for her to prompt him as to what he should say. His chief anxiety when ho found that his wife was dead, was to make sure her jewelled ring was not lost.
