BUTTER FOR U.S.A.
DUTY SHUTS US OUT. During August and September the price of butter was steadily rising in U.S.A. and on September « it stood at 200/- duty paid, but as this was only equal to 144/- free of duty, there was no opportunity for business in New Zealand butter. On August 10 the b\itter stored in America stood at, 131 million pounds compared with 109 million for the same period last year. However, with the prospects of normal production during the winter months and the excessive duty there seems little likelihood of any substantial portion of New Zealand’s surplus stocks being sold in the United States.
