ROYAL SHOW

ITS EFFECTS ON DISTRICT SHOWS. MASTERTON, Oct 28. Tito effect which tho Royal Agricultural Society is having on district shows was the subject of very trenchant criticism at tho annual reunion of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society in Carterton last night. Mr L. H. Smart (secretary), in referring to tho absence of several old exhibitors, stated that the Royal Show was having the opposite effect from which it was intended to have, and there was little doubt that there were many noted breeders who held their stock back from district shows so that they might be prepared for higher honours. What district societies wanted was that tho best should be exhibited so that competing breeders could benefit in experience by the stock shown against them. The Wairarapa Society had supported tho Royal Society, and was actually suffering from its operations. Mr D. Buchanan (Tiakitahuna) said the majority of the North Island associations wore up against the Royal Society in respect to the manner in which it was affecting their annual shows. Why, ho asked, should not tho district shows see the best stock exhibited, instead of it being carted from one end of the country to the other merely to be exhibited at the Royal? He considered that the Royal was going U> kill all other .spring shows. He thought it a most unwise decision to hold tho Royal Show this year in Auckland, in that cattle were being taken through the tick-infested area. It was one of the biggest blunders over made, and if the cattle tick was brought back to areas which at present enjoyed immunity the Agricultural Department would be blamed. Speaking later, the Hon. A. u. McUeod suggested that it might be a good idea to compel those breeders exhibiting at tho Royal Show to take a championship at their own show first, thus proving their mettle on their own ground.
