WEDDEL AND COMPANY
DAIRY PRODUCE REVIEW. A DIFFICULT YEAR. The annual report made by W. Wed del and Co. on the dairy produce market emphasises the point stressed by the Imperial Economic Committee’s report—that as soon as the retail price of butter increases beyond a certain point the public begins to economise, tho demand falls away, and prices have then to be reduced much too drastically to bring back the former consumptive demand. Messrs Weddcl declare that tho New Zealand policy of regulating imports of both butter and cheese received a set-back through tho shipping strike. They say:As a result, several heavy shipments of butler reached their destination in close sequence. In tho main, however, the object of tho board was attained, as at the end Of April ho loss than 9250 tons of butter and 11,500 tons of cheese remained in cool store awaiting shipment. So far as cheese is concerned, it remains to be seen whether tire policy is altogether wise, as It will bring tho late shipments from New Zealand into serious competition with the Canadian make. 'i’ooley Street Dosses. Sor far as cheese is concerned, although tho average selling values over the year were higher than for some years past, it has been a very disappointing season to the many operators who early in tho New Zealand season covered their requirements ahead at prices which could not be realised after the goods had been landed. It is estimated that nearly 30,000 tons, or 45 per cent, of tho season’s make of choose in Now Zealand, was sold forward at prices which averaged the equivalent of iOOs c.i.f., whereas the market value of the goods after arrival, except in the first few weeks, was well under 100 s c.i.f.
