AMATEUR ATHLETICS

Manawata Association

FIFTH ANNUAL MEETING

About thirty members of the Manawatu Amateur Athletic Association attended the fifth annual meeting held last night. Mr. T. Stubbs briefly welcomed those present, and mentioned that the past season had been most successful; for the first time in the history of the Association there was a credit balance in the bank. Annual Report.

The annual report, which was adopted, reads, inter alia, as follows. "The 1925-26 season from all points of view has been very successful. Never since the inception of the club has it been in such a sound position financially as at the end of the present season. “During the year eight evening meetings were held at the Sportsground, and those were well supported by active members. Interest in the events was stimulated by the presence of members of the Feilding Club, to whom thanks arc extended. The cup presented for the most points in running at the evening meetings was won by L. J. Mullins, with 37, A. Weston being second with 23. The Boomerang Cup for cycling was won by C. Casey.

••Thls year the country clubs’ championships were held in Palmerston North, and it is mainly due to the successful management of this meeting by the committee that the club’s financial position is so sound. A strong team represented this club, and although not successful in winning the McVilly Shield, it put up a great performance. The Glaxo Cup, for primary school competition, was again competed for, West End school proving the winners. Congratulations arc extended them on their success.

“Thanks arc due to the members of iho committee for collecting trophies to the value of £24 13s 6d and cash donations of £l7 16s 6d towards the trophy account, making a total of £42 10s. Special thanks are due to the treasurer (Mr. G. S. Boeder) for his activities in this connection, he personally collecting trophies to the value of £29 7s 6d. At the end of tlie last financial year the club’s debit balance was 4s 5d and its liabilities wore £lO 9s 9d, but it is pleasing to state that this season there is a substantial credit balance, while our liabilities are nil.”

In speaking to the annual report, the, president, Mr. T. Stubbs, said that he thought all athletic enthusiasts would be pleased with the statement prepared by the secretary. Amateur athletics, he said, had had a "bad spin” in Palmerston North, but the last meeting had proved to be a great success, and in this respect Mr. Stubbs mentioned that a great deal of the credit for the success or this meeting was due to Mr. R. A. Rose, of Mastcrlon, to whom the Association was deeply indebted. Now that the Association was in a good financial condition, he thought that there was justification for activities further afield. It was hoped to hold the majority of future meetings on the A. and P. grounds, which fact, it was thought, would be an attraction to the general public. Election Of Officers.
