SLIPPING HAND BRAKE

When the hand brake ratchet becomes so worn that the pawl begins to slip, thus releasing the brake, something must bo done immediately, as the condition is one that is obviously fraught by considerable danger. The proper remedy Is, of course, to lit a new ratchet, but in cases, where this is not immediately available the difficulty can often be overcome temporarily by slacking off the brake-rod adjustment, thus bringing into use an unworn part of the ratchet.
