MANAWATU HUNT CLUB SH ' MOST SUCCESSFUL MEETING. AOTEA ROA WINS HUNT CUP. TAME FOX STAGES COMEBACK. The Manawatu Hunt was decidedly fortunate in its choice of the day for its annual totalisator meeting, which was held on Saturday on the Awapuui course. The track was in good order and the racing proved to bo more than usually interesting, by reason of the many fighting finishes that were staged. The tote, after making a l>ad start in the opening event, ended the day with an increase in the takings of £S2G, as compared with tho mooting held at Fcilding last year. The respective figures are £11,411 and £10,586 and the result is tho more gratifying when recent “tote” turnovers are considered. Prior to tho Cup race, there was a parade of two-year-olds, four taking part in a two furlongs flutter. The order in which they finished was Lady Orby, ch.f. Orby's Pride —Lady Manners, blk.c. Arrowsmith —Sweet Tipperary, Cavity, b.g. Gasbag—Canyon and Discourse ch.f. Gasbag— Ladify. The Gasbag youngsters excited favourable comment, but tlu beautifully moulded Sugarbag, the black filly by Gasbag—Sansevicra, | was not produced. Home Made Gets Home. i Scrafchings reduced the field of the Kiwitea Bracelet Handicap to three. Home Made being a strong favourite I in a very small pool. Tho order for the first half-mile was Tea Loaves, Home Made and Mt. Crag. Tho easi pace was then increased a little. Tea i Leaves and Homo Made running to- ■ gethcr to the turn into the straight, i Here Mt. Crag made his run on the outside and was soon in charge, but the favourite came at him again and the two fought out a splendid finish. Home Wade getting the verdict by half a length. Tea Leaves was font lengths further back. Had Mt. Crag delayed his run until nearer homo and not covered so much ground on tho turn, he would probably have giver, the winner a beating. A Favourite Beaten. Comedio, who looked a picture, was given pride of place in the betting tor the Te Matai Maiden race, five furlongs, but be was beaten a- long way from home. Chief honours went to Volplane, the second favourite, which was in (ho lead throughout and won nicely by half a' length from Mt. Star, which put in a great run from tho rear over the last furlong. Rising Star was always handy and finished third, close up. White Ringlet was in the lead with the winner till the straight, but in the run home she gave ground and finished fourth. Next to pass the post were Comedic, Boy and Limonitc. Aotea Boa's Cup. Aotca Roa was not troubled to win (ho Hunt Cup Steeplechase after going to the front after the first time round. The roan gelding jumped confidently, flying his fences, and his pace on the flat also stood him in good stead. He gradually drew away from his field , and at the finish was at least sixty yards ahead of Birkenosc. The latter I jumped badly over the initial stages , of the race and was hard pressed hy i the heavily-burdened Kovno in tho | run home. Adrienne was fourth and Tarcroa a long way back. Tho early leader was Suweilch, but a faulty jump unseated his rider. A Boyal Game. There is no doubt about the quality of Royal Game’s performance in th« Aokautcro Hack, six furlongs. Tho black colt made all his own running and easily beat the hard-ridden Lin Arlington by half a length. A red-' liot favourite in Our Jack was third, but a poor one. Ho was also being hard-pressed a long way from homo and at tho finish he had had enough. Pangolin. Girribillie and Petal were closest to the placed horses. A Close Call. The public prophesied tho result of the Parorangi Hack Steeples rather well, the placed horses finishing in the order of favouritism. The winner Labour Morn, won by a very narrow margin front Oncroa. after meeting with some interference from the latter. Hokici, which jumped the lasi fence‘ simultaneously with the other two, was only half a length away an 4 had ho not made a faulty jump along the back the second time, he woulf. have won. Donoghue. the early leader was fourth. Woden, Hats Off, and Sometime also completed the course Ohorcro and To Pal ran off and Taraketo was pulling up. After Much Chasing. Tame. Fox staged a pleasing and not unexpected come-back in tin l Kairanga Handicap, over ono and aquarter miles, when he won narrowly from Merry Day and Beaumont, after a gruelling struggle to the judge. Bonmurc led Rascal, Gurnion, AlcrrJ Day, Beaumont and Miss Hupana out of the straight, Gurnion taking charge I before they ran down the back. With the journey half completed, those nearest the loader were Beaumont. Rascal, Opa. Benmuro and Merry Day, while Pantlcr was last. Tam' Fox moved up on the homo turn and Novar also improved his position. Into the straight, Benmuro had charge from Tamo Fox, Beaumont. Gurnion, Opa, and Novar, while Merry Day finding himself unable to get through on tho inside running, came round a big bunch. Beaumont put in his run early and had Tamo Fox doing hia ' best in the run home, when Merry Day put in a strong claim. Thcso three fought out a. desperado finish.

Tame Fox, finishing on well, boat Merry Day by a bare half length, while Beaumont, who was stopping i over the last few yards, was -just nosed out of tho money. Benmure was fourth, just ahead of Novar, Rascal and Opa. A Fine Jumper.

Free use of the scratching pen reduced the field of tho Raumai Hunters' Hurdle raw to five, and punters to one dividend. Ayun Kara was a strong favourite, with nearly £2OO more support than Kangi Sarto. The winner, Hallowmorn, gave a pleasing exhibition of jumping and gave H. Gordon his second easy success for the afternoon. Hallowmorn led throughout with Mt. Clyde in close attendance over the first mile. Entering the back straight the second time, Rang! Sarto moved up from the rear and Ayun Kara joined tho two loaders. Hallowmorn and the favourite were together as they entered tho straight, with Rangi Sarto going great guns under his 13 stone to overtake them. His task, however, was hopeless as far as the winner was concerned and he just beat Mount Clyde for second place by a nock. Ayun Kara and Rapiti were next. A Big Return. In a brisk betting race, Penman was a slightly better favourite than Our Jack for the. Flaxbourne Hack, over seven furlongs. Solid support also came for Inner Harbour and Mister Gamp. Inner Harbour went to the front from tho rise of the barrier, followed by Lin Arlington and Mountain Jean. Then Molto assumed tho role of pacemaker and soon had a break of four lengths on Lin Arlington. These two were first into the straight. Penman, Inner Harbour Mt Jean and Out Jack being their nearest attendants. Lin Arlington, Mister Gamp and Our Jack furnished another fine finish, and they passed tho post in that order, at an interval of a neck and a head. Tho favourite was fourth, and Molto, Mountain Jean and Inner Harbour passed tho post next To Maire was last. The dividend re turned by the winner—tho second that day—was a substantial one.
