THE AGRICURTURAL COLLEGE
(To the Editor.) Sir. —Jn your issue of to-day’s date you state that the proposed loan ofr £lo, not) for the purchase of the Me Hardy property could have been obtained without (lie ratepayer’s sanction. J think that you are mistaken and 1 hat it cannot, and never could be raised without being referred to the ratepayers. You further say that the present is no lime for luxuries or extravagance, and it seems lo mu quite unreasonable that the already overburdened ratepayers of this town should bo called upon to pay £IO,OOO for what is a national and not a local undertaking. The Agricultural College is for the benefit of all New Zealand and, if the McHardy properly is necessary for the completion of Hie scheme, then the cost of it should be shared by the whole country. —I am, cic., BTTfcfH. LAWYER. Palmerston North Aug. 20 1 126. I “Bush Lawyer” , has certainly chosen an appropriate nom-de-plume. We are noi mistaken. The Borough Council could quite easily-—ami quite properly, if it thought, lit—have made the gift by special legislation—-Ed. M 1.).T. |
