SEAMEN’S SURRENDER

- SURPRISE VICTORY FOR OWNERS. [By Electric Cable—Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] SYDNEY, March 31. The decision of the seamen to resume work on the coastal vessels constituted a victory for the owners. The strikers will have to wait until vacancies occur in the crews before they can re-enter the service. The decision caused a surprise in shipping circles as the seamen had emphatically stated at the beginning of the strike that they would not resume duty until the owners had dispensed with the services of the volunteers. The seamen also decided to lift the “black” embargo placed on the vessels of the Newcastle and Hunter River Company. It is expected that the waterside workers will also declare the strike off at the weekly meeting to-day.
