HELPING THE FARMER

CO-OPERATION OP TOWN AND . COUNTRY.

In a recent address to the Agriculture Commission of the American Bankers’ Association, Secretary Jardine stressed the need of interpreting agriculture to the people in the towns and cities. These people, he said do not know farming and the farmer.

He emphasised the fact tha(t the problems of agriculture, particularly its economic and social problems, will never be solved by farmers and agricultural workers alone. The understanding and co-operation of people in other fields of human activities will be essential. So complex and in-tor-related are the conditions of our civilisation to-day, that no one group can stand alone. Wc need to recognise this fact. Our problems are national problems, and they will be solved through our taking into consideration not only all parts of the country and all institutions, but all groups in the population. We need a leadership which will carry to the people not engaged in agriculture an understanding of its significance, its difficulties ,and the place in the national economy of the people. In calling attention to this important truth, Secretary Jardine has rendered a service not only to agriculture, but also to leaders in industry and commerce. There is need for co-operation and constructive leadership on the part of all. The field of agriculture is so large and so vital that all business interests ar e affected by it. Its problems are so numerous and far-reaching that there is ample opportunity for all interests to make their contribution to the solution or its nroblom.
