CHECKMATE SOON IN CHINESE WAR GAME

The civil war has reached an important stage. The Mukden Generals Li Ching-lin and Chang Tsong-chang, who only loosely acknowledge Marshal Chang Tso-lin’s authority, having recaptured Tientsin from Kuo Minchun, are now advancing along the railway to Pekin, while Chang Tsolin’s cavalry is advancing on Pekin from the east, and Wu Pei-fu, having completely cleared the Honan Province of Kuo Mln-chun forces, is advancing on the capital along the PekinHankow railway. Meanwhile, Wu Pcl-fu’s rear is threatened owing to a Red coup d’etat recently at Changsha. Hankow reports that troops from Changsha are moving against Yochow on the Plunan-Hupeh border, and that thin is regarded at Wu Pel-fu’s headquarters as the preliminary to a general Red expedition against Hankow. TO SETTLE THE BOYCOTT. PIONG KONG-CANTON CONFERENCE. HONG KONG, March 28. The Governor, in addressing the Chamber of Commerce , announced that the Canton Government was now prepared to appoint three members to negotiate with three Hong Kong officials for the settlement of the boycott The Governor said that he agreed with the proposal and hoped that the negotiations wouid lead to an honourable and lasting settlement. “It seems sane cammon-sense,” he said, “the Cantonese people are at last boating down Communism and re-establishing law and order." He regarded the outlook as more hopeful than at any time since Juno.
