DAV J D AND GOLIATH ! CALLING ON LEAfiVE, [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] j [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] LONDON, March 4. Resenting the decision of a Com mittee of the. Privy Council recoin mending that the Channel Islands pa;, an annual contribution to the Imperial Exchcquei', the Channel Islanders dare the Exchequer to come and take the money. "Let England do her worst,” they say. A leading statesman suggests an appeal to the League of Nations. The Channel Islands—Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, and Sark, with smaller islands—are situated off the northern coast of France, from ten to thirty miles distant. They are the only portions of the original Dukedom of Normandy retained by Britain. Their total area is 47,083 acres and their total population 89.614. The principal officer in each island Is the LieutenantGovernor, who represents the KingEmperor (the Duke. of Normally). French is the official language of the local Legislatures. The islands, being practically exempt from Imperial taxation, possess a very large trade. They are not bound by Acts of the Imperial Parliament unless specially named In them. Their exception from Imperial taxation has made them highly popular places of residence —for six months In the year—for English people who wish to avoid the payment of income tax. No doubt it is this fact which has attracted the attention of the Privy Council.
