MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION

Black and White For Green and White

OWNERS ADVISED TO SHOP EARLY

The owner of every motor vehicle displaying the now familiar green and white number plates after March 31st will b e liable to a fine of £2O.

The Motor Vehicles Registration Act demands that new numberplates for the ensuing year must be procured before the beginning of April and the annual license fee paid. The plates for 1026-27 are to be black and white and will cost 2s 6d a set. The license fee varies with the class of vehicle, that for motor cycles being 10s, for motor cars and one-ton ’trucks with pneumatic tyres £2, and motor omnibuses and lorries with solid tyres, £5.

Application for the new plates [must bo made on a special form at the Post Office. Quite a number of questions have to be answered, as for instance,, engine number, chassis number, seating accommodation, make of vehicle, situation of garage, [ whether intended for conveyance of passengers, and the like, It is the 1 intention of the Palmerston North officials to set aside a certain portion of the main Post Office counter ,to deal with the applications as | soon as the number-plates arrive, which should be in the course of a day or so. It is also anticipated that there will be the usual lastminute rush at the end of the month and motorists will show a generous | consideration towards the officials if they will put into practice the motto: “Shop Early.’* Trouble is expected in cases where [motors have changed hands and transfer of ownership has not been notified. The owner of a car is the only person who can apply for new number-plates and under the Registration Act, the purchaser of a sec-ond-hand car is not the owner until, the vendor has submitted his registration papers to the Post Office officials for endorsement of the transfer. The transper fee is 5s and to save themselves trouble, all owners should make sure that transfers have been completed before they apply for new licenses. It is also interesting to note that vendor and purchaser are each , liable to a fine of £lO for every day a car remains with the transfer incomplete. The disposal of the old green and white plates is left to the whim and fancy of the individual motorist. No doubt they will find many uses. It has been suggested, for instance, that they will be ideal to patch mice holes in a cupboard, while many will no doubt emblazon soap boxes on perambulator wheels.
