FOUNTAIN PEN FOR KEY
A MINISTER’S PROVISO. “There 1s probably no man in New Zealand to-day who possesses more gold keys than yourself," said Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., to the Minister of Education, Sir James Parr, at the opening of the Palmerston North Girls’ High School Hostel yesterday afternoon. Sir James laughingly agreed that the statement was probably correct. Mr. Nash said there were several matters that would require the Minister’s attention before he left for England to take up the duties of High Commissioner. The board of Governors had therefore decided to present him wijth a fountain pen instead of a key, so that he could sign the necessary documents in favour of turther improvements for Palmerston North before he left the Dominion (laughter). He hoped Sir James would make good use of the gift In their interests.
Expressing It in legal (terms, the Minister, amidst much laughter, accepted the pen with the proviso that its acceptance should not bind him with regard to fujture grants for Palmerston North.
