SUBMARINE TACTICS
OPEN NEW POSSIBILITIES. MASSED ATTACKS WITH SALVOS OF TORPEDOES. [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] LONDON. Mifrch 3. The “Daily News” naval correspondent says that a revolution in submarine tactics enabling mass attacks to launch scores of torpedoes simultaneously and necessitating sweeping changes in naval operations is likely to result from the American Navy’s solution of the problem of underwater communication. Preliminary tests established a direct telephonic communication of two miles, and there is a possibility of the range being greatly extended. The system is based on inaudible or super-tonic sound waves projected through water, enabling the commodore of the submarine flagship to direct the movements of the flotilla with the same ease as the Admiralty manoeuvres a battleship fleet. The correspondent expressed the opinion that the invention would enable submarines to become a legitimate weapon, outliving the odium acquired owing to their attack on merchantmen.
