At about 4.20 yesterday afternoon, while contractors were removing pine trees in Victoria Park, a large tree fell in the opposite direction to that anticipated. It crashed through the street lighting wire but fortunately the juice was not on, and Mr. Downes was able to repair the damage. New Racecourse Standi. The initial work in connection with the erection of the new stewards’ stnnd on the racecourse has already been started. The site has been pegged out and a large tree, which it was thought might endanger the new building when completed, has been cut down. A start will be made on the building at an early date. Personal. Mr. M. E. Perreau (Mayor) lias left for the Dunedin Exhibition. Mr. N. Burke, a recent arrival from England, has ben. appointed temporary assistant in the secondary department of the Foxton District High School.
