WEEK-END CRICKET

PUBLIC SERVICE DEFEATS FEILDING. After a keenly-contented game, Public Service succeeded in wresting victory once again from Feilding on Kowhai Park on Saturday afternoon. In their opening innings Feilding made 142 and Public Service concluded their first strike with a total of 143. Follding’s second strike was most dismal and the 'side was dismissed for 38, their opponents giving nothing away. AHctory for Public Service appeared easy, but their innings proved to be a difficult one and when the veteran Victor Smith took a high difficult catch against the sun, which called forth the unanimous applause of the spectators it looked as though Feilding still had a chance. Another wicket fell immediately afterwards through a fine catch by Shakes and the situation became intensely interesting when there were four wickets down for live runs. Drennan made the win for Public Service possible and his fifteen, Including a six, together with Hoffmelster’a enterprise and a score of eight, dampened Feilding’s hopes. However, the game was not yet won and the field and bowlers worked as they had never worked before for victory. Amadio commenced hitting out when seven wickets had fallen and the score stood at 37. and a nic e four gave his team victory. High School Old Boys made a better showing in their second innings against Cheltonham-Kimbolton, but, notwithstanding they had to suffer defeat by an Innings and 34 runs. Dewe, Hanson and; Pawson batted well for th e School, whilst M. Hocking was responsible for the majority of the wickets. j • '
