Manawatu Daily Times MONDAY, JANUARY 18, 1926. Accidents to the “Limited."
The third accident In three months to the “Limited” Is somewhat disquieting', especially in view of the similarity of the mishaps. Twice broken axles have caused derailments and once the cause was a faulty wheel. Good luck was with the passengers on each occasion, for in all three incidents there were possibilities of serious loss of life. Under the circumstances, the Department can do no less than hold an exhaustive inquiry into the condition of the rolling stock and the effect on it of the now services. It is not suggested that the speed of the expresses is the cause of these accidents, but it is suggested that the wear and tear is much greater on the rolling stock. The number of expresses has been very greatly increased, and as there have been very few additions to the rolling stock it follows naturally that the carriages are being put to a much greater strain. This may or may not be a
reason for the mishaps. In any case the position is serious enough to demand investigation and the travelling public will not feel secure until they know that the best brains of the Department have been set to work to discover the causes of the trouble.
