Suggestion Is one of those who are sure to become prominent in the betting'for the Wellington Cup. The favourites at present are The Banker and Count Cavour, but the latter is no certain starter, and the former’s chances over 1J miles against more brilliant and less-weighted candidates are not regarded with- favour by “Avis.” Grand Knight has been entered for both Cup and sprint at Trentham. but it is believed his mission will be the former event For a reason not yet very apparent, Hipo is at a very short price for the Telegraph Handicap. Sprinters that are sure to find favour in ante-post; bettors’ eves are Ladv Cavendish, Black Cat and I.ady Ridicule.

Tall Timber is riven pride of place in the handicap for the Foxton Cup, a position to which the recent form form of the Aucklander entitles him. A horse that appears to have been luxuriously handicapped for the Foxton Cup is Opa, and punters will probably express appreciation of the fact. He won the Tararua Welter at Awapunl and was unlucky in the Stratford Cup. Bank Note has been turned out and. when he races again ,lt will be as a three-year-old. A slowly-run race should give Santiago a, good chance in the Foxton Cup. The San Fran gelding Is very well at present. Bonogne has earned his place at the top of the handicap for the big sprint at Foxton. His recent record reads: 1,1, 1,3, 0. 0, 0. 0. 1. 1. H. H. Doyle, who has Birthmark under, his charge, has taken over King Cheops, the six year old son of Egypt-AU’s Well, which will race in his interest

Mosaic, which won—and lost —the Ellerslle Handicap on New Year’s Day, will be seen at Thames and Trentham, when he will have the services of W. H. Jones. Early forecasts of Trentham results give Enthusiasm a good chance in the Wellington Cup. The daughter of Panmure-Hartla will be accompanied on the journey south by Tamatete, Ohul and Limited. Tamatete has been nominated for the , Telegraph Handicap and other open sprints, and Limited for the Wellington Stakes. Pew (if any) valuable English stallions imported to Australia have done as much racing and lasted as long as The Night Patrol (says "Poseidon'’). Before he came to Australia he had started 38 times for 10 wins, 10 seconds, 4 thirds, and 14 times unplaced In the Commonwealth he has raced in three States and started 28 times for 11 wins, 5 seconds, 8 thirds and 9 times unplaced. Thus in OS'lstarts he haa( scored 21 wins and 22 minor placings. In stakes In Australia, he has won £10,102. 1 Now rising nine years old, he thrives on galloping and racing, and according to his long ex-

perienced trainer, James Sooble, he la a beautiful horse to manage. In running two miles over hurdles at Randwlck in 5.882i —a world’s record—on Boxing Day, there was nothing in climatic conditions that favoured Mendit. At the time the race was run the thermometer registered over 100 in the shade, and there was not the faintest suggestion of a breeze.
