DEMAND FOR WOOL IS MUCH KEENER

Prices Advance at Christchurch Sales QUALITY OP CLIPS MARKED BY WEATHER [Per Press Association.] ' CHRISTCHURCH. Last Night. The second Christchurch wool sale of the season was commenced this evening at 7.30. The two first catalogues were sold before an adjournment was made. The catalogue comprised 20,023 bales. The quality of the offerings is very disappointing. A good deal of the wool is tender, and in many cases dingyThe back-country clips showed the effects of the severe winter and erratic spring. There was a full bench of buyers, representing all centres. The sale was a sound one from the outset, the demand being spirited and competition general. It was in marked contrast to the hesitancy and Irregularity that featured the opening sale. Ad classes of wools met with a firmer demand and good to super wools showed an advance of from a halfpenny per lb. on the first sale, whilst shabby lots sold more freely, with little appreciable advance. As an instance of the briskness of the bidding and improved tone or thfe market, only 56' bales of the first catalogue of 4432 bales was passed and 27 out of the second of 1798.

The top price of the sale last night was 22Jd for Merino. The best Cor r riedale price was 21Jd; a twenty bales lot of half-bred made 21 id, and a seven bales lot 212 d, a three-quarter bred lot made ISd and cross-bred 13d. Merino pieces made to 17Jd; Corrlodale to Kid and half-bred to 16Jd. The sale will be resumed to-morrow morning.
