Recently the several unions affiliated to the West Coast Miners’ Council following on a conference with representatives of the coal owners, held a ballot on the question of whether the policy previously decided on of work - ing live days weekly should be discontinued. It in understood the coal owners, at the conference, signified their objection to the Innovation. The "eturns of the ballots disclose a majority in favour of continuing the five days’ policy.

The compulsory enforcement of the 44-hour week is causing much disorganisation in various directions, and the Courts are flooded with applications for a readjustment of conditions In numbers of cases mutual adjust, ments have been reached between employers and employees. A verv general expression of opinion among employers is that the reduction in working hours will have a serious effect on trade and mean an Increase in the cost of living for the general public.
