The Clifford Plate, run at Ellerslie on Saturday, gave Count Oavour an excellent chance of avenging hla defeat by Raipne in the Auckland Cup, and it is generally agreed the latter was beaten fairly and squarely; and tt long way from home. However, no doubt on account of the hard race Rapine had under 9.8 in the Auck. land Cup. Jofferd was probably a bit lenient with him, and ha got only a slx-furlong gallop during the week, bo that his defeat, while deservedly adding to the reputation of Count Cavour, need not indicate a slide on the part of Rapine., Distance is Immaterial to Grand Knight. His last three wins have been over C furlongs, 9 furlongs and li miles respectively. One notices his nomination for the Wellington Cup, which la over li miles. The unlucky horse of the holiday racing In these parts was Degage, who ran 8 seconds and a dead heat. The useful Kllbroney mare is reported to be very well and may race with better fortune in the near future

Nominations received by the Poxton R. C. are very good, but again the chief weakness is In the principal event. The Cup candidates are a very moderate lot.

Regarding' the result of the Electric Hack Handicap on the second day of the Morton meeting, a number of keen watchers who were In a good position near the post have declared their opinion t», “Avia” .that Capita-

lation was unlucky not to catch the eye of the Judge first. The writer must repeat however, that he unhesitatingly gave the race .to Bon March.

After his break .down in the Pending Cup, it did not appear as if that good horse Suggestion would be recovered sufficiently to repeat his last years’ Wairarapa Cup performance. However, he made a rapid recovery and after a most searching series of tryouts, to insure his soundness, he went to the post and the expected (one almost wrote the inevitable) happened.'

The defeat of both Commendation and X.ysanJer in the Royal Stakes at Ellerslie on Saturday was a leading incident in an afternoon's sport, punctuated by surprises of the sensational order. Commendation certainly made a good run from the head of the straight, but Lysander was well in trouble. When It came to real business, and the strong race was not to his liking. ' >

Count Cavour is another noteworthy horse that failed to command attention when offered by auction as a yearling, for he was passed in at XOOgns. remarks "Phaeton” in tho "N. Z. Herald”. Mr. J. S. Barrett bought the son of Solferino from the breeder, Mr. J. Brannigan, and the chestnut richly reyarded tho Canterbury sportsman, fo his winnings In stakes to date amount to £8205.

It is doubtful says “Archer" whether there la another horse In New Zealand that has made the same improvement as To Monnnui since the beginning of the current season when he was racing in hack company. Te Monanul is now one of our best handicap horses and stayers, proof of which he gave by finishing third In the Auckland Cup with 8.7, and win. Ring the A.R.C. Handicap In fine style with 8.11. Earlier In the season he won the Mitchelson Cup at Ellorslie and ho Is bound to wind up the season In a very prominent position on the winning horses list.

The tjiree-year-olds that contested the Great Northern Derby were not a good lot, and Star Stranger and Mandahe beat them pointless . The hon. ours went to Star Stranger who stays well, and Is fully entitled to rank as the best of his age. There was not a great deal in his Derby win, but were the race run over again he might win easier, for he was kept a good way out of It In the first five furlongs.

The best* performer at Ellerslie at distances from six furlongs to a mile was Reremoana, who accounted for the first division of the Railway Handicap with 9.7 and also for the King's Plate, a mile welght-for-age event. His form simply afforded further proof of his excellence and at the above-mentioned distances he has very few superiors In the Dominion. The times he recorded in his races were the fastest lor the respective distancs at the meeting. Lady Cavendish displayed a fine dash of brilliancy in the second division of the Railway Handicap and won from end to end. Last season she was the crack two-year-old and she has trained on better than many Absurd fillies have, tor she has notched two wins two seconds and a third in six starts this season. Owing to developing soreness after winning the “Railway" she did not run again at the meeting. The manner of her latest victory suggests more success for her In sprint events.

The most expensive horse for local punters last week was Commendation, which was supported very heavily by ■•stay-at-homes” as well as visitors to Ellerslie. In the Foal Stakes on the first day, he refused to leave the mark, and in the 1 Royal Stakes he was slow to begin. ' These defeats have caused him to lose some caste, but there is no doubt about his speed. If he can be cured early of his falling, he will win more classic events this year, as ho is being reserved for this type of race.

Holymond, which won the Grey Handicap ot Ellerslie on Saturday and paid a big dividend, was purchased by Mr. T. Impey as a yearling for 400 guineas, and this was her first victory. As a two-year-old last season Holymond started on five occasions without getting into a place.

Threadneedle, after running second at Woodville, was taken to Auckland for the summer meeting, but owing to going amiss could not be started till Saturday, when he won the Sylvia Handicap well. He is a nice looking youngster and should do further good service for his owner, Mr. D. J. Barry.

Nominations for .all events for the Fahlatua Racing Club's meeting close at 9 o’clock to-morrow night. The telegraph office at Pahiatua closes at 5 o’clock.

Hawke's Bay Trotting Club nominations close with the secretary, Mr. H. P. Stratton, Box 156, Hastings, at 8 o'clock to-night.

Rapine's fighting victory in the Auckland Cup of 1925, must be re. corded as one of the best performances to date of this great son of Martian. The pace was solid througout, but Rapine was always in a good position and the fact that such proved stayers as Count Cavonr. To Monanui, The Banker, Muraahl and Star Ranger were in that order behind him shows that sheer merit won the race. Perhaps Randwick will aoe him again soon, " " '
