AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN

SELECTORS CHOOSE TEAMS. WHO’LL GO TO ENGLAND? MELBOURNE, November 19. The Australian Eleven selectors — H. L. Oollins (N.S.W.). J. Ryder (Vic.) and Clem Hill (S.A.) —to-day chose the teams to, represent Australia and the Rest of Australia in the test trial match, to be played in Sydney on December 4,5, 7, and 8. They are as follows: — Australia.—H. L. Collins (N.S.W.), capt., J. Ryder (Vic.), W. A. Oldfield (N.S.W.), J. M Gregory (N.S.W.). W. H. Ponsford (Vic.), J. M. Taylor (N.S.W.), T. J, E. Andrews (N.S.W.). H. L. Hendry (Vic.), P. M. Hornibrook (Qld.), A. F. Kippax (N.S.W.). The Rest.—W Bardsley (N.S.W.). capt., V. Richardson (S.A.), A. Richardson (S.A.), W. M. Woodfull (Vic.), D. Blackie (Vic.). H. O. Rock (N.S.W). H. S. Love (Vic.), J. D. Scot! (S.A.), G. V. Grlmmett (S:A.). C. G. Macartney (N.S.W.), G. E. Kelloway (N.S.W.), J. W. Rymill (S.A.). The* selectors slate that the selection of Grimmett with The Rest team Is not necessarily their opinion of his merit, as it was thought desirable that he and Mailey should play opposite sides. They also stated that J. Ellis (Victoria) was not available owing to the injury he sustained in Adelaide. As the Board of Control has asked the selectors to choose as many of the Australian team as possible before the end of the year, the side chosen to represent Australia to-day will give an Indication of the opinions of the selectors. The Sheffield Shield games between Victoria and Now South Wales, to begin in Melbourne on Boxing Day, win, however, have their influence on the selectors. Hill and Ryder saw the match In Adelaide between South Australia and Victoria, which ended yesterday—Ryder was a player—and thus are well versed in the form of the players of the two States. Hill came to Melbourne with the Victorian team this morning, and Col. lins arrived by the Sydney express. Comments on Teams. The Australian XI, is particularly strong in batting, Hornibrook and Mailey being the only weak batsmen in the side; and Mailey frequently renders' a good account of himself in

that department. It Is well supplied with fieldsmen, too —Hendry, Mailey, and Ryder—for the fast bowling of Gregory, and with outfleldsmen, for Taylor and Kippax have no equals in the Commonwealth, and Ponsford is very sound. Hornibrook is the only real weakness in the field? so he will have to do something wiSii the ball to please his critics. It is in the bowling department that the Australian XI. is so vulnerable. Outside Gregory and Mailey, there ar e no match-winning bowlers in the side, unless Hendry has greatly improved this season. Hornibrook has done nothing extraordinary, even in Brisbane club cricket, this season, but if the wicket be sticky he would become most valuable. The Rest is a well-balanced side, having nine good batsmen among the twelve chosen, and six bowlers—Scott, Grimmett, Blackie, Kelloway, Macartney and A. Richardson. Its, weakest point is the Ashling department, for A. Richardson, Rock, Scott, and K.h way are very slow, and Macartney and Bardsley are getting no younger. Those who may be regarded as ce tainties for the tour now are Collins, Ryder, Oldfield, Gregory, ■ Tavlor. Ponsford. Andrews, and perhaps Hendry and Kippax,
