FERNLEAVES WILT IN BRISBANE SUN

New Zealand All oat for 237 DACRE NOTCHES 80 BY ENTERPRISING PLAY [By Electric Cable —Copyright] [Aust and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received Friday, 8.35 p.m.) BRISBANE, December 4. The first match of the New Zealand tour, against Queensland, commenced at noon on the Brisbane cricket ground. New Zealand won the toss and batted first on a perfect wicket The heat was intense. Worker and Blunt opened for New Zealand. Blunt shaped well until Oxenham came. He bowled excellently, varying the flight of the ball and got him leg before. Oliver played cautiously, but when he opened his shoulders to Barstow, h e was caught on the boundary. Patrick and Dacra stopped the proaession to the pavilion when the score was i orty-four. Patrick was content to 'hold his end up. After lunch, Dacre played sparkling cricket and had nine fours in his score of forty-eight. The first hundred went up in a hundred and four minutes. Dacre, timing leg shots well, ran into the fifties in fairly even time. Patrick was an admirable support to Dacro and played solid defensive cricket. Dacre was dismissed with a catch behind the stumps, having scored his eighty in one hundred and two minutes. He played the most enterprising cricket seen in Brisbane for a long time and his score included twelve fours. Lowry played correct cricket, but occasionally went for the bowling and scored some fine shots behind the wicket. He was uncomfortable when facing Noyes and gave a chance when he skied one. Scores: — Allcott and Cunningham put up a good last wicket stand, adding nearly thirty runs to the score. The New Zealanders were at the wickets for two hundred and nineteen minutes. Each batsman showed that his cricket Was correct and sound, but only Dacre and Lowry were able to settle down, ilthough the wicket was an easy one 'or the batsmen, O’Connor and Higgins opened confidently for Queensland to the bowling of Mcßeath and Cunningham. McBeath was bowling erratically on the off and Higgins, a promising young batsman, scored ten runs off three successive balls from Cunningham, but he quietened down when facing Blunt ,who was tossing up tricky deliveries. At this stage, the New Zealanders’ clean fielding was in marked contrast to that of the Queenslanders. When his score was nine. O'Connor should have been out, but the chance on the boundary was not accepted. Although the batsmen were playing warily, the bowling was not particularly good and the wicket was Ideal. The crowd cheered ironically when O’Connor glanced one for three. The batsmen were batting solidly at the drawing of stumps. New Zealand.—First Innings. Worker, b Noyes 5 Blunt, out, l.b. bR.
