REWARD OF MERIT

ESSAY PRIZES. Boys of the Palmerston North High School congregated yesterday morning to witness the presenting of prizes by members of the Lunch.;, Club to the winners in the recent essay competition on behalf of the New Zealand Association of British Manufacturers and Agents. The Club was represented by Messrs C. T. Salmon, J. H. Stevens, T. R. Hodder and G. I. McGregor. Mr J. Murray, M.A., rector, extended a welcome to the visitors, after which Mr Salmon addressed the scholars. He said that it had been a difficult task for the judge to separate the first 20 or 30 best efforts, and he congratulated heartily the winners of the three prizes, giving also a word of encouragement to those who had been unsuccessful. The prizes were then handed to Fdmund Webber (three-guinea order for books), Graham Orossley (twoguinea order), and Alwyn Carter (oneguinea order), who were all given a good reception by their follow-pupils. In an address to the pupils, Mr Stevens said that it was the intention of the Lunch Club to confer on the school a scholarship tenable for two years, the annual value being £25. Terms, conditions and application would be determined In January and personally he would like to see it given for something pertaining to New Zealand.
