FAREWELL TO MR R. M. McKNIGHT

ON RETIREMENT FROM N.Z.L. & M.A., DTD. At the Empire Hall last night, Mr. R, M. McKnight, late manager of the New Zealand Loan ,'aml Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., who had been connected with the company since 1889, Was tendered a complimentary smoke concert by the Mana.wa.tu and West Coast Live Stock Auctioneers’ Association on the occasion of his retirement from the company’s service. The following toast list was honmred: The King (proposed by the chairman, Mr. R. S. Anraham); Our Guest (proposed by the chairman, responded to by Mr. McKnight); Live Stock Interests (proposed by Mr. A. j. Kellow, responded to by Messrs. 15, Hassell and W. H. Hall); Parliament of New Zealand (proposed by Mr. A. Sutherland, responded to by Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., whose Parliamentary reminiscences wer e one of the gems of the evening); Our Guest’s Successor, Mr. G. W. Brown (proposed by Mr. R. P. Abraham, responded to by Mr. Brown); (The Association’s Auctioneers (proposed by Mr. H. R. Cooper, responded to by Messrs. R. C. Wallace, R. P. Abraham and B. Waidograve); Mrs. McKnight (proposed by Mr. W. H. Hall, responded to by the guest); the Secretary (proposed by Mr. J. A. Nash, responded to by Mr. P. Sim); The Chairman (proposed by Mr. H. R. Cooper, responded to by Mr. R. S. Abraham). The chairman was supported by Messrs. C. H. P. Smith, H. R. Cooper. B. J. Jacobs, and J. B. Wither in his remarks in connection with the toast of the guest of the evening. The musical programme was in capable hands. Mr. B. J. Jacobs, besides telling some stories appropriate to the occasion, sang "When You’re All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go,’’ “A Chip of the old Block,” "Where the Black-eyed Susans Grow,’’ and “A bit of Blarney," while Mr. R. B. Ross’s numbers were: “My Old Shako,” “Beneath Thy Window,” “Lighterman Tom,” and “Red Devon by the Sea.’ Mr. F. A. McLachlan was accompansi.t

A feature of the function was the beautiful table decorations, the roses sent along- by Mrs. R. S. Abraham being- a picture of loveliness. The whole of the organisation was carried out by Mr. Peter Sim, and the catering, which was done by Mrs. Lon Freeman, reflected great credit on the Association.
