Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Foot and family of Woodvlllo, have been staying in Napier for a few days, and wore the guests .of Mrs. Clifford, Hastings street. The death of Mrs. R. Woodham, which occurred at Masterton on Wednesday. removes another of the fast diminishing band of early pioneers Deceased, who had been in indifferent health for some time, had attained the age of 88 years, and was one of the earliest colonists,, coming to New Zealand 71 years ago. She came to the Wairarapa 70 years ago, the mode of transport at that time being t y bullock d'-ay. Five daughters and four sons, Mesdames J. Haxton, T. Mitchell, H. Vaughan (Masterton), C. Wilson, R. Herd (Wellington) Messrs. W.' Woodham (Poxton), A. Woodham' (Hutt), J. Woodham (Taumamnui) and F. Woodham (Napier) , arc left to mourn their loss.
Mrs Mary Ann Jones, one of the Dominion’s oldest settlers, passed away at her late residence in Bourke street at an early hour yesterday. Born in Wellington in ISSO, the deceased lady was the eldest daughter of the late Mr Charles Stewart, who was one of the first colonists to arrive in New Zealand, and the surveyor of the Paekalcariki track and other roads. The late Mrs Jones married in 1572 and took up residence with her husband at the back of Pahautanui, where they engaged in farming for many years. They retired and settled at Newtown, Wellington, but later went back to the land at New Plymouth and then came to Palmerston North a few years ago. Besides her husband, who is SO years of age, Mrs Jones leaves four daxrghtors:—• Merdames C. Anderson and N. Sands (Shannon), A .Taylor (Pahautanui), C. Fraser (Auckland) —and three sons —Arthur (Auckland), Charles (Pahautanui), and O. Jones (Linton). There are 22 grand children.
