DOUBLE WIN FOR MANAWATU. The first inter-club match between the Manawatu and Takaro tennis clubs this season was played yesterday when the A teams mot at the Fitzhcrbert street courts. The visiting toara was not up to usual standard while that of the Manawatu club, particularly in the men’s department, was of top class, with the result that Manawatu won by 16 sets to love and 96 games to 53. There was one lady short in the visiting team and Misses McFarlane and Littlejohn wore called upon to fill the vacancy in the singles and doubles. The detailed results are as follow Manawatu players being mentioned first in each instance: — Ladies’ Singles:—Miss McKenzie defeated Miss B. McFarlane 7-1, Miss Carty defeated Miss A. Littlejohn 7-0 Miss Mullins defeated Miss Littlejohn 7-5, Mrs Northey defeated Mrs Trevor 7-5. Men’s Singles:—Miller defeated Ellis 9-2, Scoble defeated Brown 9-5, Hansen defeated Cooksley 9-1, Kendrick defeated Daroux 9-3. Ladies’ Doubles: —Misses McKenzie and Carty defeated Misses McFarlane and Littlejohn 7-3, Miss Mullins and •Mrs Northey defeated Miss Littlejohn and Mrs Trevor 7-1. Men’s Doubles: —Miller and Scoble defeated Ellis and Brown 9-7, Hansen and Kendrick defeated Cooksley and Daroux 9-4. Mixed Doubles: —Miller and Miss McKenzie defeated Ellis and Miss McFarlane 7-0, Scoble and Miss .Carty defeated Brown and Miss McFarlane 7-6, Hansen and Miss Mullins defeated Cooksley and Miss Littlejohn 7-5. Kendrick and Mrs Northey defeated Daroux and' Mrs Trevor 7-4. Won on the Games. Only the B ladies’ teams met at Takaro and after good games, Manawatu ran out the winners on the games, both teams winning three sets each, but Manawatu gained 44 games lo Tokaro’s 84. Singles:—Miss Symons defeated Miss Ricketts 9-2, Miss Fuller defeated Miss Dean 9-5, Miss Hopwood lost to Miss Ferguson 4-9, Miss Marshall lost to Miss Broughton 6-9. Doubles; —Misses Symons and Fuller defeated Misses Ricketts and Dean 9-0, Misses Hopwood and Marshall lost to Misses Ferguson and Broughton 7-9. PALMERSTON NORTH CLUB’S LADDER. There are 79 nethv members in the men’s division and SO in the ladies. The balance of the players have been placed on the unclassified list from which they may challenge the holder of any position on the ladder. If defeated the challengers may fake on two other players anywhere below the the one originally challenged. If defeated throe times these challengers are then placed at the bottom of the ladder. , , . , . Several players of note have joined the Club, notably S. G. Wyatt, C. C. Yates, Chas. Lind and H. F. Rogers. Wyatt is an ex-Brougham Hill player who is expected to find a place in. the senior team, Yates was top man foi Longburn lost year. Lind gave a taste of his quality as top man at Woodvifie on Saturday, and Rogers was a loading Fiji player. They, along with others, are certain to keep the classified players busy. Miss D. Wallace

and Mrs. C. C. Yates are also expected to find prominent places on the ladies’ ladder. Open Tournament.

Besides two clubs ,the programme of the open tournament in January has already been circulated to practically every leading player in New Zealand. The generosity of Messrs E. L. Barnes, G. H. Bennett and HS. Wycherley has enabled this to be done free of all cost to the Palmerston North Lawn Tennis Club. In connection . with trophies II should be mentioned that Mr. H. B. Tucker, in adidtion to a cup to be won outright, has offered a solid silver cup to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals. The former has already been received by the Club, and the latter will be handed over as soon as it has been decided to "which event to allocate It. Mr. Tucker has suggested the Laires - Handicap Singles be the event. The doubles championships of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School will bo run off on the Linton street courts on Saturday morning, commencing at 9.30 o'clock. In connection with the singles decided on Saturday week, the Palmerston North Lawn Tennis Club has offered the privileges of full membership for the 1925-26 season to L. Hills and T. Adkins, the senior champion and runner-up. The following new members have been elected to the Palmerston North Club: G. J. Bagnall, Captain R. F. Bale,, C. and W. Bryden, D’Oyly, R. W. McKee, H, F. Rogers, C. C. Yates, Mesdames R. F. Bale, F. Pegden, H. F. Rogers, C. C. Yates, Misses S. Macdonald and Eileen Trask.

■On Saturday,, December 12, the Club will engage in two friendly combats. A team will visit Otaki and the Bulls’ Club will send its players down to Palmerston North. A comprehensive programme of interclub matches for the rest of the season, after the holidays, has been drawn up by the match committee (Messrs. J. W. Fergio and J. H. Grant).

The intra-club committee (Messrs. E. D. Andrews and F. A. McLachian) has decided to play a handicap singles’ event immediately, handicapped on the system of owing and receiving odds. This provides for the playing of gameipand sets instead of points and is being utilised for the men’s events in the open tourney in January. NEW ZEALAND CHAMPION. OLLIVIER MAY NOT COMPETE. Geoffrey Ollivier, the New Zealand tennis singles ehampion,_ may not play in this year’s championship. He has withdrawn his name from the Canterbury ranking list, and D. G. France,, the second man, will now be at the top of the ladder. Ollivier said last week ne was finding It hard to get the practice necessary if he was to stay in form. “At present I am anyhow,” he said; "but if I can manage to get back to form I may possibly enter for the Now Zealand championship tournament."
