FAREWELL SOCIAL. [From Our Own Correspondent.] There was a large gathering in the Coronation Hall on Tuesday evening at a farewell social to Mr W. IC. Howell, a popular member of the staff of the local post oftice, who is being transferred to Ngaruawahia. Mr Howell is well known throughout the district .having, during his stay in I;ongotea, shown keen interest in all branches of sport, generally, taking an active part. The tennis club, besides losing a valued playing member, will lose a most efficient secretary. On behalf of his many friends and his fellow workers at the post office, he was presented with a travelling bag and rug by Mr L. H. Yarrall (ch/, man of the Town Board). In making the presentation, Mr Yarrall said it was with much regret that he heard of Mr Howell's transfer, and he was sure that feel ing was general. During the two and a half years Mr Howell had been in Kongotea he had taken his part in public affairs and was a valuable citizen. He was to be congratulated on attaining his present position at so early an age, and his success would be a matter of much satisfaction to his parents. Mr Yarrall declared: "You don’t get something for nothing,” and Mr Howell has not attained his position by wasting his time—• the present gathering showed he made good use of his opportunities, both in office and out.” In referring to the local post office the speaker said it was a pleasure to go there on business as one always met with the unfailing courtesy which was proof of the kindly qualities of the senior officers who have in their hands the training of the young men. In conclusion he wished Mr Howell the greatest success in the future. Mr Howell returned thanks for the parting gift and expressions of good wishes .stating that wherever hq went he would never forget that night in Kongotea. Apologies were received from Messrs W. Smith (postmaster) and W. J. Crouchor, who were unable to be present. The following contributed to the musical programme:—Mrs Mollcs, monologue: Miss H. Teaz, song; Mr G. Nicol, cornet solo. Music for dancing was provided by Mesdames A. D. and W. Scott, Miss L. Smith and Messrs Wallace and Hurdle (Feilding). Messrs Bower and McCall were M’s. C.
