NEW ZEAE ANDERS’ CHANCES ADVICE BY ADMINISTRATOR. New Zealanders who contemplate taking up their residence in Samoa either as workers or agriculturalists would do well to consider the advice given at Auckland on Monday by General Sir George Richardson, Administrator of the territory. Sir George was asked what open, ings were available in Samoa for New Zealanders. He said the Administration received frequent inquiries as to the possibilities of New Zealanders obtaining appointments in the Government service or on the plantation staffs, while there were also inquiries for land available for cultivation. In the matter of appointments it was the policy of the Government to find an outlet as far as possible for the locally-born young Europeans, who had little opportunity of employment in a small country such as Samoa, so that there were not many vacancies that could be filled by New Zealanders This also applied to positions on the Government plantations, which were largely filled by local residents, although there were certainly a few vacancies from time to time in senior positions, both in the Government service and on the plantations. In dealing with the question of land for settlement, Sir George said there was good land to bo obtained, but It must be be remembered that tnose taking it up required to have capital. The Government. was running the large plantations taken over from the Gormans, so that only undeveloped land was obtainable. When it was considered that it took five years for ■coco plants to mature, and nine years before there was any payable return from coconuts, it would he seen the planter must have capital with which to develop his holding and be able to wait for his crops.
