The first of the Christchurch wool sales for this season was held to-day, when 18,000 hales were offered, the bulk being half-bred wool, light m condition, but well-grown. There was a full bench of buyers, representing all wool-using countries. The sale lack'cd animation and values were down on recent North Island sales by a half-penny to a penny per lb. The Continental section secured the heavier end of th 0 catalogue, America and Bradford buying sparingly. Local mills bid strongly for super-fine wools, both fleece and pieces, and local fellmongers also operated briskly for pieces and scouring lots. The market generally was accepted, passings being less than 12 per cent. Top prices were:—Merino, 22Jd; Corriedale, 21d; half-bred, 23d; three-qnarter-bred, 18id; cross-bred, 16d: Merino pieces, 19d; half-bred pieces, 18id; cross-bred. 12? d; crutchings, Hid; bellies, 16d; and locks 9Jd. These prices, however, are about 2d in advance of the figures secured by thp good wools in the various grades. The range of values was: — Merino: Super, 20d to 22id medium; 18d to 193 d; inferior, 13d to 17d. Corrdiedale; Super. 19id to 2ld; medium, 17Jd to 18d; Inferior, IStd to 16ld. „ , Fine half-bred: Super, 19d to 2Sd: medium, lG|d to 183 d; inferior, 13,id to 16Jd. , . Medium half-bred; Super, 18d 20d medium. 15Jd to 171 d; inferior, 124 d to 15d. Coarse half-bred: Super, 17d to 19d; medium, 14id to 16ld: inferior, 10*d to 14d. Three-quarter-bred: Super, 15id to 18Jd; medium, 13id to 15d; inferior, 10id to 13d. Aged cross-bred: Super, 13? d to 16d; medium, 12fcd to 13id; inferior, lOld to 12d. Coarse cross-bred: Super, 13d to 14id: medium, Hid to 125 d; inferior Old to lid. First pieces: 13d to 19d; second pieces, 8d to 12d; locks, 5d to 9id: bellies, 8d to 16d; crutchings, 5d ta IOJd.
