(By “Avis”). LADY GAY DOES HER BEST. Santiago was again sent out favourite for the Hurdles and was again unfortunate in that he did not have a clear run over the last bit, with the result that he just got his nose in front of Many Colours to get second money. He was paying exactly the same price as on Saturday. Rafa misbehaved at the post as usual and when they finally got away. All] Wind, Lady Gay and Admiral Cod-i rlngton were in the lead. Rafa wad moving up fast, but atr the flrs| fence was knocked right back again) Past the stand the leaders were All Wind, Lady' Gay, Admiral Codrlngl ton and Rafa. Out of the straight, Many Colours moved up behind the leader, while Comedy Prince wa£ pulled up. The order to the five fmv long peg was Many Colours and All Wind together, Admiral Codrlngtop, Lady Gay. Slump and Gold Peak, while Rafa was tailed off. Lady Gayput on the pace round the bend and entered the straight ahead of Many Colours, Admiral Codrington, Slumij, Santiago and Gold Peak. The wlnne|r was clear at the last fence and kept off all the opposition. Santiago, lying behind four others, could not get through until the last few strides and finished very fast to boat Many Colours for second place. Gold Peak, Admiral Codrington and Slump were close up. Weight Tells. Tamateto carried nearly half thp money on the tote for the Orou(\ States, with Motley paying a little better than evens. Tamatete, Motley and Standard were the only horses in the race, the two year olds being nowhere and Dale Ogden dwelling at the post, Tamatete, with Motley on his flank led to the straight, with Standard about a couple of lengths behind. Below the distance Motley joined issue with Tamatete and walked away at the finish to win by one and a half lengths, with Standard, by no moans disgraced, half a length a.vay in third place. Elthcin weighed in fourth. It was a case of one good horse giving another good horse a stone and a half and not being able to do it. Those who were on both first and second showed good judgment. A Close Call. Lady Eentinck was an odds on favourite for the Colyton Handicap, it being a great betting race among the other five starters. Lady Bcntinck, Rouex and Tuahine were first away from the tapes, but Shuteye was quickly in the van and rounding the bend had a two lengths break on the favourite, with Rouex, Tuahine, Solferange and Miss Hupana in that order. Shuteye, ridden hard, was still in front forty yards from the post, but was then overwhelmed and Rouex and Lady Bentinck shot up, a desperate finish resulting ih Lady Bentinck getting the verdict by a short head, from Rouex, with Shuteye half a length away. Tuahine a* close fourth, Solferange and Miss Hupana next. First Acre First Again. First Acre was a good favourite for the Nikau Hack Handicap and after being with the leading division the whole way, finished convincingly a length ahead of Lin Arlington, which was w’armly fancied by his connections. but neglected by the public. The betting about the chances of the Blue Peter and No Response bracket, Subjection and Glengariff was very close. First Acre was first to show up at the start and when they had gone nearly a furlong the order behind the Acre colt was Sleet, Sea Star, Subjection, Master Lucerne, Lin Arlington, and Ne-wbury King. At the far turn Sleet had charge from the favourite, Subjection, Master Lucerne and Gold Clip. Sleet entered the straight with a two lengths’ lead of First Acre with Subjection, Lin Arlington, - Master Lucerne, and Sea Star all handy. First Acre was on terms with the leader at the distance and went on to win from Lin Arlington and Sleet, lengths separating the placed horses. Subjection, Glengariff and Blue Jay were next. Good Sport a Good Sort. Punters elected Good Sport a firm favourite for the St Andrew’s Handicap, being content with little better than even money after a hardly-won race. After an unconscionable delay at the post, caused through Askari's

muilshness, the field eventually left him In the rear, Kllfaire, Gauntlet, Euphonium, Good Sport, Imperial Spark, Scotch Mixture passing the stand in a bunch, with Askari tailed off. Enthusiasm went up behind Imperial Spark as they ran to the hack; otherwise the order was unchanged. Gauntlet and Kllfaire were still in charge at the half mile, but a furlong further on the order was Euphonium, Good Sport, Scotch Mixture, Imperial Spark, with Kalakaua, showing up on the far side of the field. Euphonium, ICilfalre, Gauntlet and Good Sport entered the straight in close order. Good Sport moved up at the distance, but was strongly challelngod by Imperial Spark and had to be ridden out to beat Mr Nash’s gelding by a short neck with Enthusiasm a head away, followed by Euchre, Kilfairo and Gauntlet. Adavale the Maiden. The Novice Stakes produced a spirited preliminary engagement on the tote, Royal Land winding up a good favourite from Adavale and Panart. Sovena, Adavale, Duetto, and Royal Land were quickest beginners, Eden. Hall being left. Adavale, Duetto, Royal Land, Sovena and Mahjong comprised the leading division, at the half mile, Panart displacing Mahjong as they turned into the straight. Adavale maintained her position and also Duetto, but Royal Land was outpaced in the run to the judge and finished behind the above mentioned two, Sovena, Panart and Mahjong. Duetto was neglected and paid a nice price. Novar Plies the Mag. A red-hot favourite for the Rongotea Hack Welter, Bouhomme was left lengths behind when the barrier was released and did well to finish in the middle of the field. Asleep took a big bunch out of the straight, the order as they ran round to the six furlongs post being Asleep, Novar, Kllburn, Aropeta, Troilus and Kyla, with Mountain Top going up again after losing some ground earlier. With another furlong left behind, Novar was conducting Aropeta, Asleep Kyla, Kllburn and Mountain Top, with the favourite going up. Novar, Kyla, Bon Nevis, Asleep, Mountain Top and Closeflre formed the leading division as they ran to the straight entrance which the leader entered clear of Ben Nevis, Kyla, Mountain Top, Bonhomme and Asleep. Under punishment Novar finished a length ahead of Mountain Top, with Ben Nevis a long neck away in third place. Kilorum and Kllburn were close up in fourth and fifth places respectively. A. Griffiths rider of Copper Nob, was subsequently stood down for fourteen days for careless riding and advised to ride with a longer rein. Golden Fleece. The Lamb was seized on as a good thing in the last race and so it proved. He was made a four-figure favourite, with nearly £350 more than Bouogne. The fortunes of the Beaumont —Alabama bracket, Martulla and Snatcher were also followed by a good section of the public. Captain Wai and Martulla got the worst of the start and when the field had settled down. Royal Diadem and Probate were in front. The order with two furlongs covered was Probate, Royal Diadem, Beaumont, Alabama, and Bonogne. Royal Diadem was still in charge at the straight entrance but the closely-knit field soon overwhelmed him and at the half distance The Lamb showed up and went on to win by a- length from Martulla which came very fast after covering a good deal of ground. Beaumont was a good third and Snatcher and Bumptious next. takapuna second day. BAGBY UP ON FOUR WINNERS. [Per Press Association.l AUCKLAND, Last Night.
