THE RACING DESCRIBED. (By “Avis”.) They made Santiago favourite for the Hurdles and the San Fran gelding was unlucky not to_ win, for in the next stride he was certainly in the lead as he and Bonny Rill passed the post, locked together. Velvet King was quickly In charge of the field from the start, wiu. To Mairo, Lady Gay, Otauru Kid, and Many Colours. While still in the lead, Velvet King, at the last hurdle in the straight, opposite the public stand, crashed thorugh the inside rail, Otauru Kid and Te Maire were together in the lead runing out of the straight, but Bonny Rill and Lady Gay moved up and had established themselves in the lead by the time they reached the back. The order at the home turn was-Bonny Rill, Lady Gay, Many Colours and Santiago. Over the last fence, Bonny Rill and Santiago took off together. Bowden aid most others thought the race was won, but he allowed Bonny Bill to keep In the lead too long and his mount could not cut the Bonlform mare dowm in time. Three lengths behind the dividend payers came Lady Gay and Strategy together. [Maiden Favourite. Ohui, full sister to Tamatete, Tukia and Padonna (all runners at the meeting), was made a good favourite for the Trial Plate and McCarten had a comfortble ride it being only a question of what woulu be second. The favourite and Adavalc got away well with Rawhero Installing himself behind them. After they had gone a couple of furlongs, the order was Adavale and Ohui still together, Trance, Duetto, Rawhero and Sovena. The leaders were still unchallenged as they swept Into the straigtt, with Trance, Royal Elm and Duetto next 'The favourite then came away and ran well clear of the field to win by three lengths from Novar, which came with a late run on the outer.. Adavale was half a length away in third place, and Panart fourth. Askari’s Oup. The Cup" race proved to the world at large that Askari’s Levin form was no flash In the pan and also what great stable-craft and infinite patience will do for a well-bred rogue. Eleven

paraded for the Cup, Lucius and Euchre being withdrawn. Suggestion was a red hot favourite, and was going well when ho broke down, with half the race run—a piece of really

bad luck. Imperial Spark was second favourite with less than half the amount the favourite carried, while Avola and Enthusiasm were evenly Packed for about £2OO less. Imperial Spark went no better for Barry than he had previously for Mackie, .while Avola looked a bit above herself and was never prominent. Enthusiasm looked very well and doubtless drew a lot of support on that account, but she also proved to be unready for what proved to be a fastrun race. Kalakaua was brought out in great nick also and showed that his New Zealand Cup form was still retained. The long-delayed start, caused through .the fractiousness of the winner, eventually saw Kilfaire and Gauntlet lead into the straight from a good dispatch, the others being bunched. Passing the stand Gauntlet was clear of Avola and Kalakaua, Olympic, Kilfaire, Suggestion, with Imperial Spark last. Gauntlet and Kalakaua were still in the van at the six furlongs, with Askari, Suggestion, Avola and Olympic. At the half mile the favourite tailed off and, it was apparent, had broken down Rounding the bend the order was Gauntlet, Askari, Kalakaua, Olympic, Kilfaire, Euphonium, with Enthusiasm last. Askari was first into the straight and was not seriously challenged. He won by 1J lengths, with Kalakaua a short neck away, cutting Kilfaire out of the money. Next came Gauntlet, Euphonium, Enthusiasm, Imperial Spark, Olympic, Scotch Mixture and Avola. Both the moneyed mounts paid over the limit for their respective positions. A Dead Heat. Despite his bad position at the barrier, a big consideration at the seven furlongs post. Diogenes . was elected a big favourite for the Kowhai Hack Welter. The little fancied Lucernal, on the rails, got the best of the start and led Kilorum, Aropeta, Filletto, Banjuke and Purple Lilac down the back. At the top turn, Blue Jay had moved up through the field and took the lead from Lucernal, Aropeta, Banjuke and Flllette. The leader was done with at the straight bottom and Lucernal took up the running. The Tree Lucerne flier was not challenged until within the distance when Mask and then Fillette came at him. In a splendid finish Fillette and Lucernal passed the post ■ on terms with Mask only a head away and Ben Nevis and Kilburn the best of the others. ... A Plying Lamb. |f"" A good betting race saw Mireusonta go out with over £250 more than The Lamb, with little to choose between , Rouex, Tuahine and. Shuteye. The favourite was beaten before the straight and The Lamb was a wee bit lucky to stall off a later challenge from Good Sport, which finished very fast. Hipo, Euphonium, Kaiti, a,nd Miss Hupana did not go into ihe starter’s hands, leaving the contest to thirteen candidates. Tuahine, Mirefisonta, Lady Bentlnck, Solferange, The Lamb, Lipsol, and Tukia left the barrier in that order, ShuteNe being slow to begin. Mlreusonta soon had charge, however, and led Lady Bentlnck and Solferange together, The Lamb, Tuahine and Good Sport round the top turn. Lady Bentinck and Solferange entered the straight in the van together, ahead of The Lamb, Mireusonta and Good Sport. Here, The Lamb came away and held his advantage. Good Sport was only a short head away with Lady Bentlnck a length further back, ahead of Solferange, Tuahine and Tukia. J. Potter was later cautioned for careless riding of Lady Bentinck and for givin gunsatlsfactory evidence.

Tamateto’s Hat Trick. Tamatete won his third successive Feilding stakes in hollow fashion from Lady Cavendish. The latter finished up with £l9 more than the former, both getting well into four figures, while the others evoked very little interest. The race is quickly described. Tamatete led all itlie way and was quite unmoved at the finish while Lady Cavendish, which hung gamely to his flank was floundering badly at the last. Galllard was a poor third and Standard and Lin Arlington next Easy for Horomea. Horomea was a four-figure favourite for the Fitzroy Hack and won in fine fashion from Sleet and Glengariff. The order out from the barrier was Subjection, Bangimoana, Sleet, Glengariff, Newbury King and Horomea. With two furlongs covered, Sea Star was leading the favourite, with Anklet, Bangimoana and Sleet all handy. The leader gave place very quickly and rounding the bend Horomea had charge from Anklet and Ear gimoana. Into the straight, the loader piloted -Master Lu cernc. Anklet, Glengariff. Sea Star and Kyla with Subjection showing up on the outer. It was a procession to the judge, the placed horses being separated by half a length. Behind Glengariff came Benzora, Master Lucerne and Moutoa Lady, Subjection and Kyla. j Martulla The East. Martulla was made favourite for the Kiwitea Welter and she snatched victory from Glenross which had covered a good deal o p ground in the last ten yards. Troilus began quickest and led Captain Wai. Crossfire, Sottano, along and out of the straight Captain Wai was making play at the six furlongs from Troilus, and Beaumont. Then Troilus made another forward move and with Captain Wai, piloted Eoyal Diadem, Beaumont, Crossfire, Glenross and Sottano along the bach. Troilus and Capt. Wai were still in charge as they turned for home, with Boyal Diadem, Glenross, Crossfire and Martulla close on their heels. Glenross had his head in front at the half distance, but Martulla wore him down in the last few strides and won by a short head with. Crossfire two lengths away

Euchre, Sottano, Bumptious and Opa were next. SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES.
