fbilding spring meeting.

Feilding will be th© Mecca of lovers of the Royal sport to-day, and the Waterloo of some. Nevertheless, the hope that springs eternal in tli e punters’ breast will draw a large gathering

to the finely appointed Pending course, and Takapuna is euro, wet or fine, of another boom meeting on thb marine lawns. Much discussion “huh centred round the field In the FeUding Cup race. Suggestion, at the top of the card with 9.2, will bo favourite but with Avola 131 b». down the scale, the took of the top-weight will not be a light one, Avola has not been before the public for n little while, but it is to be remembered that she, like Suggestion, races well when fresh. Enthusiasm has not done much racing lately and one can hardly hold her as a possibility in view of this lack of public form as ti guide. Scotch Mixture, with 8.3, has had some success in the past on this course, and is reported to bo well. It would not be surprising to Bee him In one of ,the minor^ places. Imperial Spark has oomo down with a run In the weights, and in gratitude to the Imndlcappor, may ■ make a better showing than in his last fow starts at Trentham, Ashhurst and Levin. He will have a faithful local following, but It lo most difficult to see their hopes realised in this good-class field. Kilfalre, Gauntlet, Euphonium and Aakari, though recommended to some extent, do not appeal In good going, though the Levin Cup winner may possibly bo susceptible to further Improvement. Knlakaua claims a later engagement, but If he elects to run In the Cup, he should have a fair outside chance. Lucius will not start. From any angle, "Avis” loaves serious consideration to two; firstly, Avola and secondly, Suggestion. In the Wnltuna Hurdles, 1| miles, Bonooto and Obuiru Kid should make a good showing. Considering the Aorangl Trial Plate as one- race, although a division is probable, Sovena and Mint Leaf should go well, also KlysUmor and Duetto.

Flllotto has the chance to turn the tables on Diogenes in the Kwhai Haok'Woltor. The race should be between these two, but others that are well spoken of are No Response, Aropeta and Mask. Unlikely starters in the Flying Handicap are ICaltl, Euphonium, Lady Bentinck and Solferango. This moo still, however, presents a most open appearance. Probably Bonoguo, Rouox, The Lamb, and Mireuuonta, not necessary In that order, will play the top-llno roles at the finish. The field in the 20th Foildlng Stakes will probably bo reduced to three or four starters. Grand Knight is the only official scratching at present, hut Deluge, Tukia and Standard may also have the pen run through their names 'before the start. Lady Cavendish, with a 81bs. penalty, Is being picked by the cognoscenti to bent Tamateto. Penman will bo absent from the Fltzroy Hack, but will probably be a starter on Monday. Argue, and Horomoft should run prominently, while Anklet and Sleet may fill minor positions.

The field in the Klwltea Welter has so far been reduced by the removal of Treadwell and Patukl. Martulla raced so well at Ashhurst that she .must bo given a great show, while Beaumont and Alabama are a pair that will not lack the kind of support that talks. Kalakaua, if a Cup defaulter, may decide to do his best in this event. At Takapuna. In the big fields at Takapuna, punters will have plenty of material to work on. Bay Dighton, Cocoanut and Anote are three good ones in the Melrose Handicap. Garzou is the hope of the East Const in the Ponul Hurdles, but will have Irish Jig and Bustler to beat. In the Borough Handicap, Ring the Bell, Irapuka and Lady Ridicule will do better than most.

Polonett, Desert Glow and Star Ranger will be well supported for the Alison Cup.

Tea Bell should provide backers with the price of a meal after the Cambria Handicap.

The Takapuna Plate, which will now be run os one race, is a real poser. Ring Potoa and Pinon may run prominently, though no responsibility is taken for this statement.

Highway and Peter Maxwell are twa good ones in the Tlri Hurdles, which boasts a small field.

In the Cheltenham Handicap, Finelli, Nancy Lee, Exactly and Pelham will be well supported. MASON DISPOSES. GLOAMING IN A PROCESSION? If Mr. R. J. Mason says “yes," Gloaming may make at least one more public appeaiance for which his advancing years will in no way disqualify him. It is suggested, says the Christchurch "Press," that he may parade in th© procession being organised by the Canterbury Pilgrims for their 75th anniversary celebrations. At a meeting of the Procession Committee, Mr. J. 0. Jameson reported that Mr. Q. D. Greenwood had promised that, subject to Mr. Mason's sanction. Gloaming might take part in the procession.

Mr. Hayward: It’s a thousand to one against it, if I know Mason!

Mr. Jameson; Mrs. Greenwood has a say in the matter. Mr. A. T. Smith: But Mason has more.

Now Mr. Mason has an elegant opportunity of confounding the two gentlemen who claim to know him so well. If h e docs, he will contribute the "exhibit" in the procession which will certainly draw most public notice. $
