HALCOMBE

[From Our Own Correspondent.!

Rough and stormy weather greeted the opening of oie local tennis clubs season on Wednesday afternoon. Invitations had been extended to the members of the Stanway, Kakariki aid Tokorangi clubs, but very few turned up, and play waa abandoned owing to the showers and prevailing heavy gale. A fair crowd attended the euchre party and dance in the evening. Here also a disappointment awaited, the electric light failing between the hours of eleven and twelve, the hall being enveloped in total darkness. Mr J. Brown, of Kakariki, supplied the music for the evening. No power was available between the hours of 11.40 p.m. on Wednesday and 3.30 p.m .on Thursday. For the first time on record since the installation of electric lights and motors, the dairy farmers ware called upon to return to hand milking and separating. At least one farmer was put to great' inconvenience, the morning’s output having to remain unseparated as the construction of the particular plant in question did not admit of hand power without having to resort to extensive alterations. The lack of power was confined to the Halcombe district, the trouble being eventually located at the break-, ing down station, which is situated at the road junction known as Robbie’s corner. Cold wintry winds have been experienced the last few days and as usual were accompanied by a drop in the dairyman’s cream. Owing to the changeable weather the output from the herds has been very erratic figures varying to the extent of several pounds decrease on cold days with a corresponding increase on warm sunshiny days.
