BURGLARS MAKE MANY CALLS IN AUCKLAND

House Fired After Being Ransacked SMALL HAULS FROM BUSINESS PREMISES [Per Frees Association.] AUCKLAND Last Night. Burglars were busy in Auckland during Monday night, premises in different parts of the city and suburbs receiving their attention. The shop of White Bros, tobacconist, of Penrose, was broken into and tobacco and cigarettes to the value of £lO taken. Premises in Shortiand street wore also visited by burglars. A temporary bar of the Commercial hotel was entered and cash amounting to about £lO was taken from the till. Six bottles of spirits and, some cigarettes were also removed. Entry in thte case was comparatively easy, as the building In which the bar is located is partly demolished and the intruders were able to get into fhe rear passage leading to the bar. By simply breaking the glass of the door, they were able to enter the bar. As a safeguard they barricaded the door leading to Shortiand street and it was this fact that gave the first indication this morning that the premises had been entered. Kealy’s bookshop, adjoining, was also raided during the night, probably by the same persons. Entry was gained by using a ladder to climb to the first floor, where a rear door was was opened again by breaking a glass panel. Fountain pens to the value of several pounds and some novels were taken. An attempt was made during the night to force the back door of the shop of Avery and Mearns. grocers, in Edendale road, but without success. Fire last night in the residence of Mrs J. C. Smith, Burwood avenue, Hemuera, in the absence of the occupants, destroyed one room and the contents. The other rooms were badly damaged by smoke and water An examination later showed that burglars had been at work, practically every room being ransacked.
