ORCHESTRAL OFFERINGS NEXT TEAR. “The formation of a programme is not only a most subtle but a most im. porlant part of our committee's work," said Mr. Maurice Chen last. evening, when outlining the future work of the Orchestral Society. "We must first establish some interest by the players in the works chosen; these works must be reasonably within the limitations of the players: and, finally, we must strive to satisfy the public, whose assistance is of such vital importance to us." Mr. Cohen expressed his grati. fleation at the great advance made in the public’s appreciation of good music. They had now left the realm of elementary music and could make higher flights of achievement. “We can aim at an eagle even if we only hit a lark,” lie added. Speaking of the important works around which next year’s programmes would he built, Mr. Cohen made a pronouncement of considerable inter, est to music-lovers. -The first of three Important offerings he hoped would be Saint Saen’s famous piano concerto No. 2. With such an artiste as Miss Enid Wilson In their midst he was quite sure they could attempt such a task with confidence (ap. plause). Then in conjunction with the Palmerston North Band, under Bieut. Geo. Buckley, to whom Mr. Cohen a very high tribute as a musician and a man, he said he hoped to present Tschaikovsky’s famous “1812 over, ture,” an announcement ;which the orchestra received with enthusiasm. Finally, Mendelssohn’s “Bobegesang” would bo attempted, and he believed that these three presentations would mark a distinct advance on the work of tho past.
