Watea has incurred a penalty of lOlbs in the Ashhurst Cup and will now carry 9.0. The two-year-old, Rampion who holds on unbeaten certificate, was one of the bargains missed at the yearling sales at Randwick held last April. A reserve of 150l)gns. wa s put on the colt, but the bidding ceased at 1350 gns., and he was left on the hands of his breeders, the Messrs. Bricn for whom he has won in stakes £4165. It is stated that an offer of GOOOgns. was recently refSsed for Rampion. The colt is a descendant of the St. Frusquin horse Rossendale, and is viewed in a most favourable light for Derby honours.

Prior to the New Zealand Cup meeting there was an impression that Maurice McCarton, who had been out of the saddle for a “spell,” was not riding in his old form but the crack jockstor has completely dispelled that idea, and his handling of The Banker in the New Zealand and Canterbury Cups has been very favourably commented upon. To outwit good “distance” riders like R. Reed F. Porter and R. McTavish stamps hia- ronce more) as the “daddy” of them all in New Zealand. He followed up hia success on Saturday by bringing home three winners in succession.

Another useful performer went West when General Prydc came to grief in the Flying Handicap at Ellerslio on Saturday After falling at the home turn, he got up and followed the field up the straight, only to collapse and die, a broken artery probably- being the cause. The General had a very heavy season last year starting in twenty races, for five firsts three seconds and seven thirds. Prior to his fatality, the General Latour gelding had been galloping as well as ever, and his loss is a severe one to his trainer. Bert Jury. Sam. Walls, the well-known cross, country horseman, died at Auckland yesterday morning. Hu had a bad fall from Rafferty in the Hunters’ Steeples on Saturday week, but rode again on the following Monday. Subsequently tetanus developed. There was a sensational incident during the running of the Cambridge Handicap on Saturday. A Maori spectator walked across the course just as the horses were rounding the bend and was knocked down by Arch Amie, who was brought down by the collision. Fortunately, neither the Maori nor W. H. Jones, rider of Arch Amie, was injured, though the former received a- shaking and was conveyed to the casually room. There were a couple of other mishaps during the day. H. Dulieu received a cut on the leg with a spur while riding in the Trial Handicap and had to forego further riding engagements, and R. E. Thomson received a cut under one of his eyes, when Pittsworth fell with him in the Clarkln Steeplechase. Spoony was seventh favourite for the Waikato Cup, which he won from the favourite, Polonett. The winner was ridden by W. S. Bagby. It is remarkable that the same horses, Flying Juliet. Tea Time and Capella Abbey, filled the places in that order in the Tamahere Stakes at Ham. ilton Saturday and again in the Ruakura Stakes over the samo distance, yesterday. Desert Glow, second favourite, and Muraahi, third fancy on the tote, were fifth and sixth respectively in the Waikato Cup, but Ihcy probably wore again well backed yesterday when they dead.heated in the Hamilton Handicap. Nancy Lee, favourite for the Cam. bridge Handicap on Saturday, had to submit to defeat, init you can’t keep a good girl down and she again sali.ved the judge against a good sprint field yesterday, defeating two of Saturday’s Stake-winners.
