JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

(To The Editor.) Sir, —In a recent issue of your paper I noticed that local efforts are being made to establish a Junior High School in our midst. As one who knows something of the effects of such, may I be permitted space to make a few remarks upon the sut>Ject. The effects may be put under the following headings:— 1. By taking away standards 5 and 6 from all our primary schools, except the one suggested, the status of the former will bo lowered. 2. The local High School suffers. 3. Likewise the Technical School. 4. Some Of the primary school teachers will require to be moved elsewhere, owing to fall attendance. G. Unrest among our primary teach.

ers. G. Our-children will require to walk much further —in most cases necessitating their taking their lunches, and thus upsetting our present domestic arrangements. 7. The healthy emulation which .arises from sports’ competitions —in which principally the upper boys and girls of our several primary schools participate, will be lost, and our children will be the sufferers. 8. Many school inspectors are against the Idea and prefer a widening of our present primary school syllabus, which would do all that is required of the latest fad. 9. The tremendous extra expense does not warrant it. We spend quite enough now. 10. Only one person can be said to benefit —in pocket—hence its advocacy. 1.1; Too dangerous an experiment, and in any case, why interfere with what has proved to be an excellent primary course of education? 12." Its only virtue is its high sounding name Junior High School —to call it standard 7 as in my days—will not be so sweet, I am, etc., “ INTERESTED.”
