SPRING SHOW

JUDGING DAY | Mght Sunshine, With Heavy Showers ————— ' ' A drill, But fine day was the order : for 'lh o Manawatu and West Coast A r and P. Association’s Spring Show a I Palmerston North yesterday. It be Ing the weekly market day, there v.^ ! a big 6 influx of counts People and | the various side.shows and entertain- ! merits were well patronised. A special feature of the show was the' trotting, leaping and jump mg competitions. There was a packed arena, and It is doubtful f anything finer has ever been seen in Pa'mc .eton North than yesterday’s exhibitions of horsemanship; Not only vas : the Beat of the many fine riders greatly 'admired, but the turn-out, condL "i tiori and general appearance or tne animals themselves evoked the unstinted praise of an enthusiastic ringside. ■While farming interests are naturally denoted to the cattle an d sheep • clarit&B at an agricultural and pastoral tetiriw, the dog show probably at. fccricted more attention than anything else In the quadruped line. A com‘.prehonsive and altogether excellent • "doggy” exhibition was staged by the ; Mahb.wa.tu Kennel Club and on be- ! half of the excellent band of workers ■oonriected with the Institution, the ■president (Mr. W. G. Shannon), Chairman of committee (Mr. R. L. C. AUrihison) and secretary (Mr. A. R. Gliffe) were the recipients of many congratulations, richly deserved. 1 During the morning, in the presence of ft big gathering of breeders, the Hos. D. F. Wilber, who is revisiting the Dominion, where ho was a popu. Jar United States Consul-General, presented the Wilber Remembrance Trophv (of which he was the donor i In 1924) to the 1925 winner. This is the Piri Land Company, Auckland. A !- ; goVd medal was also presented to the Oehtral Development Farm (Wera-'noa-V, the 1924 holders of th e cup. The trophy was presented .by Mr. Wilber for perpetual competition for the best Friesian group. The gate takings yesterday were f4§9 G/-. The figures for the second da9(1924 (Royal Show) were £736 6/6 and’for 1023, £313 IS/.. For the second day of the Royal Show, there was Also a half-holiday. Plunkot Society. On all sides is heard hearty appre- ,, elation of and gratitude for the Plun- ! ket'Society’s rest room. Ljrt P’- Jolly, of Waiuku, judged the y?Tiesian classes. He expressed him|«6ll a 8 particularly pleased with the team that was successful in the Wilj per Cup competition. “You might R try a life-time and mover get toijpther again such a team as the Piri lAnd Company had on exhibition.” remarked Mr Jolly. AH the animals ■Werej in first class fettle. The FrieSian..section was about the only one ithat.the Royal Show next week had ; benefited. The North Auckland exhibitors probably would not have competed here had they not been on their Way south at the present time, jin referring to the champion cow, Mr Jolly, stated that this beast was dry Ktook the championship over an al in milk. The champion bull the same position at the Royal ' last year. The winning heifthe 3-yr. old class was a daughf.the Taranaki cow that producjv, over llOOlbs of fat a year or | two ago. It was very gratifying to faee that the progeny of the butter«fat champion had also the making of a splendid animal. Is judging of the Jerseys attracreat public attention. According r A. A. Ward, of Miro, the chamcow was an outstanding animal, as a milker and show beast. The that was first in its class and Champion, he predicted, would i a great name for itself in the e. Competition in some of the is was inferior, with the excepOf the 3-yr. old bulls and cows Vard also predicted a great fufor. the winning yearling bull. Ayrshlres. at the Ayrshire section had jht forward some remarkably animals, was the opinion of the i, Mr W. J. Gillies, of HampThis was especially the case in riass for cows in milk. The ipion cow, a typical beast, dis id a fine udder.* Other cows beginning to show signs of ago Sillies also remarked upon the ty of the yearling heifers. The were likewise of merit and a t to the breed. • - - - Milking Shorthorns, e milking Shorthorn exhibitors complimented by the judge, Mr . Wlndley, of Te Horo, upon the of animal that was shown. The ’ear-oM champion bull was onr

• of the test he had ever seen. The heifers were also a good lot and re fleeted creditably upon the breeders. The entries were smaller and he was rather disappointed In that direction. Polled Angus.

"The classes are not big,” said Mr *W, Robertson, of Middlemarch, whet discussing the merits ■ of the Polled Angus cattle, “but the quality if good.” The champion bull was discovered ' amongst the Syr. olds and proved to be a beast that carried itself'well, of good proportions and fine flesh and beef right down to the hooks. The winning yearling bull wai also an animal of distinction and would make a champion in time tvcome. Th females were not strong numerically and generally were a litUe on the small side. The champios cow however, was well developed and well-proportioned. Herefords Mr H. B. Stuckey, Dannevirke adjudicated in Hereford classes. There were not many good beasts shown practically the only exception being a yearling bull. Where there was not much competition, it was difficult to make comparisons and comment. Southdowns There was very close competition In all the Southdown classes, said the judge, Mr A. H. Bowen, of Toko. The 2-tooth hoggets were especially fine examples of the breed. Romneys (Natural condition) “A most excellent display,” was the remark of Mr F. R. Seddon, of Ham ilton, when he had finished judging the Romneys in natural condition. 1 was practically the only sheep class In which there was a decent numbe of entries and he had difficulty in placing the winners. ■ Mr Seddon pul forward the suggestion that it woulf. be advisable to set up a committee to inspect the' natural condition classes prior to the judge seeing then, to make quite 'Sure that all the ex Mbits were in natural condition. Ir two cas-is yesterday, he fancied trim ming and clipping had been resortec to, but gave the exhibitors the ben efit of the doubt. ISoirmeys (Open class) Mr J. Donald,’ Featherston, judge of the open Romney classes, regretted the defciency ■ in numbers,- yet was pleased with the quality. The champion ram was an animal of distinction wbile the hoggets shown were also ve - y good. This comment applied particularly to the winning ram hogget. Cornedale. The Corriedales were judged by Mr W. J. Rudd, of Blenheim, who was likewise disappointed with the numbers that came forward for competition. The breed, in his estimation, deserved more consideration from sleep men. It was quite evident that the best animals of this class in the Dominion were not on show. Eat Sheep. Mr K. W. Deighton, of Marton, commented favoirably upon the fat sheep, especially the iambs tp be killed for export. These classes brought forward some exceedingly good animals and some of the pens had to be disqualified because of overweight Anothei pen was disqualified because of the yresence of a wetaCMFWYF of the presence of a wether amongst ewes. Dogs Mr R. J. McDonald, of Dannevirke .judged the harriers and working sheep dogs. The harriers, he stated, in commenting on the exJiibits, were not very outstanding, except perhaps in the case of one old dog, which possessed quality and type The only other dog of distinction was a pup under 12 months. Working dogs did not form a very strong class One bearded collie was tlie best o. the type, being ably supported by a smooth coated dog, which, for its age, was on-5 of the best he had yet seen In the Dominion. . ~ ~ Mr W. Clarke, Wellington, adjudicated ir. several of the classes. He reone ready to criticise his judging. Not anians was only fair, with the exception of two exhibits which came from outside Palmerston North and Mrs. S Johnson’s bitch, which not only win its class, but also secured the honour of being the best dog in the -while show. There were one or two fair specimens of retrievers and greyhounds. The pointer exhibited by Messrs. Andrews and Weir and classified as the best game dog, was an animal of exceptional merit. “I wish to congratulate the Kennel Club on the way it managed the section,” stated Mr. Clarke in conclusion. “I would also like to express my appreciation of the way those who did not win took their defeat. A judge is not infallible and there is generally someone ready to criticise his judging. That one' word of dissatisfaction reached me,” Harness and Saddle Horses. That the motor car is responsible for the deterioration of the harness classes at Shows, is the opinion of, the judge, Mr N. Banks, of Cambridge. This was evident at the present show, where not only were the entries fewer, but of poorer quality except perhaps in the class for horses under :.4 hands. The horse that won the maiden hunters’ competition had given s, splendid exhibition and a severe test had also to be giveit to decide the winners in the -wire jumping competition. Engineering. "For a district of the size of the Manawatu, the number of entries in the engineering classes was disgraceful,” stated the judge, Mr P. Mat Kenzie. "The, work shown as well was nut outstanding.” The absence of wood-work exhibits at the show has also been adversely commented upon. CHAMPIONSHIP AAV ARDS. SHEEP.
