HOCKEY.

MAN AW AT U CONTROLLING BODI MEETS. ULTIMATUM TO UNTRAINED PLAYERS. Mr F. Cousins presided at last night’s meeting of the Manawatu Hookey Association. Those present were: Messrs F. Amos, R. L. C. Aitchison, W. Broughton, H. Milne, C. Reeve, W. Scott, T. Wall, and ;A. R. Clift's (hon. secretary.) Before the business of the meeting was undertaken, the chairman made feeling reference to the death of Mr H. M. Harvey, and on his motion a vote of condolence with the deceased gentleman’s relatives was passed. The Dannevirke Hockey Sub-Union conveyed its sympathy to the Manawatu Hockey Association in the great loss it had sustained by the death of such a keen hockey enthusiast.

The matter of starting a boys’ team at Hokowhitu is not to bo dropped, and the chairman, secretary and convener of the schools' hockey committee were deputed to revive the subject. The Ruahine Ladies’ Hockey Association notified that its team to meet Manawatu on Wednesday would arrive at Palmerston North at 11.15 a.m. With regard to meeting Manawatu for the Nopera Cup on a Saturday. Ruahine stated that it could not comply with the request, as the best team could not be got together. Mr W. Broughton was thanked for his services as manager of the ladies' teams to Peilding on Saturday, and gratitude expressed for the Feildiug Association's hospitality. Instead of the junior competition games on Thursday an “A” and “B" trial game (of juniors) will be played.

Saturday’s competitions will be carried on as usual, but Wednesday games, of course, have all been cancelled this week.

The New Zealand Hockey Association forwarded a receipt for £35 fet the amount of the guarantee for the match with Australia.

The secretary of the Wanganui Education Board notified that if the headmasters of Palmerston North schools were prepared to allow off at 2.30 p.m. those who wished to see the Australia-Manawatu match on Wednesday he felt sure the Board would not object. Letters were received from some headmasters stating the necessary leave would be given. How Not To Appoint a Referee. The Association is up in arms at its treatment in regard to appointment of the referees for the Australian game on Wednesday. The local body submitted three names, those of Messrs R. L. C. iAitchison. A. R. Cliffe and W. Nasmith, from which to make a choice. The Now Zealand Association ignored the nominations and notified the appointment of Messrs Crump and F. Cousins, who had been nominated for the Test match in Wellington. Gh principle, the latter gentlemen have refused the Manawatu appointment and the position is that less than a day and a half before the match the New Zealand Association has not appointed other referees. Selectors* Ultimatum. The Canterbury Hockey Association wrote thanking Manawatu for the offer to play Canterbury at Christchurch, and advised that August 15th would be the most suitable date. On this matter being brought forward, the chairman stated that in view of unsatisfactory reports with regard to training of the men to play Australia to-morrow, something hard and fast had better be arranged, as it was useless to send hair-trained men to Canterbury. The only selector present (Mr Aitchison) expressed disappointment at the cavalier way in which several members of the selected team for tomorrow's game had tackled their obligations to the Association. The result was that the selectors had decided to drop three men for the Canterbury match and not consider them for any

further representative fixtures. Had there been another ■week to go the choice of certain players would have been vetoed for the Australian match to-morrow, although chosen to wear the green-and-white in such an important game. Sir W. H. Wilson in answer to a question from the chair agreed to carry on as trainer and said ho. would rather sec novices go to Christchurch than men who would not train. The discussion was finally closed by the passing of the following motion at the instance of the chairman:— “That selectors have the full backing of the Association with regard to any action they may take in connection with selecting a team to play Canterbury’." AUSTRALIA' v. MANAWATU. . .TO-MORROW’S GREAT GAME.. . Palmerston North is to havo the honour of staging the first match of the tour of the Australian hockey team at the Showgrounds on Wednesday’, and all the eyes of the hockey world will bo centred on Manawatu on the day’. On the occasion of the previous visit of an Australian team Manawatu was not given a match accepting in lieu thereof the one test match of the tour, pleasant recollections of which .are still retained by Palmcrstonians. for the standard revealed was of the highest. Of the Australian eleven which figured in that great contest, six members will renew acquaintance on this occasion, and judged on that standaref the visitors promise to be a most formidable proposition. However, the elect to represent Manawatu are considered to be the finest combination put in the field by the local association for many seasons past.

The staging of the fixture at the Showgrounds will prove popular, for the capacious stand is capable of accommodating a big section of the crowd. The area Itself is being specially prepared and as a direct result a fast display should be the outcome.

An added attraction to Wednesday’s programme will be the meeting of: the Dannevirke and Manawatu ladies, for these combinations have in the past had several keen and close contests in which the honours have fluctuated.
