MANAWATU ELECTORATE

LABOUR CANDIDATE’S CAMPAIGN. In continuance of his campaign the Labour candidate, Mr. B. Roberts, spoke at Oroua Downs on Wednesday night to a .fair audience of settlers. Jn his opening remarks, he said he had been asked why the Labour Party was so anxious about the farmer, and the answer could be given straight from the shoulder, and true to Labour's declared purpose. The dairy industry in Now Zealand was the most sweated industry, and it was the aim of this movement everywhere, to challenge sweated conditions and exploitation although the present administration was called a farmers' government, the farmers were not satisfied, and were forming a country party. It was a significant fact, that out of the farmers’ own ranks, men who had worked in the farmers’ own organisations were coming forward as, Labour supporters. The land question had always been a vital question of Now Zealand politics, and it would become so again, it would force itself to public attention.

The speaker -was asked a great number of questions, in a free and friendly way, and these wer# satisfactorily answered. Mr. Fergusson occupied the chair. Votes of thanks to the speaker and the chairman concluded the meeting at a late hour.
