FEILDING BOROUGH.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Fcilding Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. W. E. Garth cw presiding. There were also present:—Councillors Burrell, Elliott, Pair. McCorkindale, Prydc, Sandilands, Stewart and Sutton. Finance Committee Report. In connection with the application of Mrs. McLeod for a refund of the cost of extending the electric mains to her property in Aorangi Street, amounting to £24 10/6, the finance committee recommended that the Mnnawatu-Oroua Power Board be written to, asking that a refund be made. The Council agreed to this and also confirmed the Mayor’s action in granting permission to the Hospital comforts fund committee permission to hold a street stall in Fcilding on Friday last. The committee reported, with regard to the £18,500 waterworks loan, that everything was now in order and the money should be received any time this month. Accounts amounting to £546 2/1 and payments since last meeting amounting to £1364 18/4 were approved and passed for payment. In view of the fact that the maintenance account for the quarter ended June 30, was unduly high, and that in consequence funds for special work are not available, it was resolved further to reduce the casual staff, by six men, until such time as the roads loan construction work could be gone on with. Works. The purchasing of a light grader was referred to the engineer for report. On the recommendation of the committee, it was decided to procure 200 tons of union asphalt for the coming season, the landed price this year being approximately £9 7/6 per ton, as against £lO per ton last year. The Council’s share of maintenance for the year ended March 31st, 1925, of the lower Manawatu Gorge bridge £4 5/9, and Aorangi bridge £4l 12/9, was passed for payment. An application was received from Mr. L. DLcgg on river protection work, and it was decided to inform him that two men would be sent up to carry out the work, as soon as he was ready, and that the repairs asked for in Sherwill street had already been carried out: that Mr. ID. Higgin bo informed that the Council cannot see its way clear to carry out any further river protection work at present; and that Mr. A. Williamson be asked to submit complete plans of his proposed sub-division showing cross section, cuttings, etc., for the committee’s consideration. Water and Abattoirs. With regard to proposals by Mr. Hausmann, manager of the Fcilding Bacon Company, re additions and alterations required in the pig killing department to cope with the very considerably increased killing that he anticipated his company would require in the near future, the committee reported that it had thoroughly gone into the matter, and the Borough engineer had prepared a rough plan and estimate of cost. It was decided that the alterations, as per plan submitted by the engineer, be carried out. The alterations are to be done by the Borough staff under the engineer’s supervision and tenders will be called for the new constructional , work. It was resolved to inform Mrs. M. ! and Mr. W. Churcher street and that the question of water extension has been referred to the Borough engineer for an estimate of cost; an dthat Mr. E. J. Benge bo informed that the Council could not grant his request to install electric light in the abattoir house. The committee also reported having made an inspection of the abattoir buildings, _ pens, and drains, and found them in ~such a condition as to warrant a thorough overhaul, and with this in view, recommended F f The engineer bo instructed to con with the abattoir manager, and bring clown a comprehensive report, setting out what was required and the estimated cost to be considered at the next meeting cf the committee. Correspondence. 1 From the Manawatu Gorge Road Board of Control, asking for the appointment of delegates to a conference on July 20, at Palmerston North regarding finances. The Mayor and town clerk were appointed to attend with instructions to oppose any further expenditure on the road. The Mayor also reported on the result of the deputation to Wellington. The Wanganui Museum sought the loan of a collection of coins in the Council’s possession. Granted, the exhibits to be insured. Messrs. R. W. Holmes and Sons wrote with reference to the water scheme, and plans for the now pipe line and easements were submitted. ■—Referred to the finance committee for a special report. Several points of the scheme, notably the settling basin, were discussed at length and on this point it was decided to consult the engineers further. Hon. D. H. Guthrie’s private secretary wrote notifying conditions of arrangements' made by the Highways Board with Boroughs of under 6,000 population.—Received. The Fire Board urged that plugs should bo clearly marked, and also drew attention to the number of false alarms through rubbish fires in the Borough. Received, St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church asked that repairs be made to the adjacent thoroughfare.—Referred to the works committee. General. The town clerk was appointed returning officer for the Oroua electorate, the Council agreeing to the Department’s suggestion in this respect. The Borough inspector was appointed an inspector under the new motor regulations. The tender of £7l by Mr W. Ormerod for painting the caretaker’s cottage at the reservoir, was accepted, as was also that of Mr A. W. Cleland, for painting the Borough inspector's office, the price being £ll 8/4. Cr. Pryde reported that one of the fireplaces in Johnson Park had been badly damaged by vandals and urged that public attention should be drawn to the matter.
