BOXING.
MASON WINS TWO BELTS. [By Electric Cable—Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Tuesday, 7 p.m.) LONDON, June 22. Boxing twenty rounds for the British and European light-weight championship, ‘ Harry Mason, the European champion, beat Ernie Izzard, the British champion, in the ninth round. It is understood that although Izzard was obviously beaten, the referee awarded the fight to Mason ,on the ground that Izzard’s seconds had remained in the ring after the gong Pandemonium ensued, and women fainted.
Mason was aggressive and forced the fight from the start. He had the better of the opening rounds, but Izzard improved in the fourth and fifth, and there was not much difference in the next two. In the eighth Mason floored Izzard with a smashing left to the jaw. There was terrific uproar. Mason, thinking Izzard had taken the full count, went to assist him to rise, but the referee told them to box on. Mason attacked fiercely and floored his staggering opponent several times. When the bell went for the ninth, Izzard remained seated in his corner and the referee awarded the fight to Mason. PURDY MATCHED. FOR “GLORIOUS FOURTH.” (Received Tuesday, 7.25 p.m.) SYDNEY. June 23.
