PRIEST LIBELLED.

ELECTION 35 YEARS AGO. LONDON, May 8. An apology has followed the issue of a writ against Lord Ernest Hamilton, whose book, “Forty Years On,” describes his brother Frederick’s election as a member of the House of Commons for North Tyrone in 1890, against Dougherty, a Nationalist. The author asserts that Father McConnell Logue, now parish priest at Castlederg, was then a most bitter Nationalist, and Dougherty's election agent. Nevertheless, he left the defeated candidate’s festivities, where whisky was the chief drink, and joined Lord Frederick Hamilton’s party upstairs in the same hotel, where champagne was flowing, after which McConnell Logue paid a passionate tribute to Lord Frederick .adding that no man on God's earth was better fitted to represent Tyrone’ in the House of Commons. The author commented: "Great are the powers of Moet and Chandon.” Father McConnell Logue denies that he was present, as he had been a lifelong temperance worker. Lord Ernest Hamilton has withdrawn the book, and will eliminate the offending chapter from future issues. He will also pay ; substantial damages.
